I think, in this instance (record label...but not a job interview), your credibility will lie somewhat in how stylishly and artistically you present yourself. Suit or not, I wouldn't look boring or dowdy in any way.

What kind of artist, and how does this artist dress on stage? I would let that be a little bit of a guide - dress more formally than the artist, but if the artist is an artist who dresses super bizarre and trendy, I'd try more self-expression than if it's one of the current crop of artists who wear ties on stage.
