Hello, I have a loud noise if I accelerate which seems to come from the power steering system or belt. i am not sure. if i accelerate it is really loud and i am a bit concerned now. any idea ??!! much appreciated If I turn the steering wheel it makes some noise as well and the rpm is going up in neutral. Avensis 1.8 GS, autom. 9 yrs old

When you turn the steering wheel while the engine is idling it senses the extra load and increases the revs. Does it have a belt, I thought these cars had electric power steering?

no, there is a belt for the pump. it is the old version, from 2001 they have changed it ! I can get a used one from the scrapyard for £40. dont wanna spend that much for a new one. it is an old car. hope it wont be that complicated to change it.

In that case, if the oil level is OK and the belt and tensioner are in good condition, I'd be tempted to stick on the secondhand one. Remember to buy power steering fluid, and bleed the system when you're finished.

ok, oil level and belt are ok. will take the offer and bleed the system when I'm finished. hope I can fix this. thanks for your advice. ttyl
