Thread: Selective corrosion of 302/316

I was asked to analyze a water calibration vane used in residential water system. The stem is 316 and the blade is 302 (blade is pinned in the slot at the bottom of the stem). The 316 is virtually eaten away, but the 302 only has surface roughness in the area in the slot. The tolerance between the max blade thickness and minimum stem slot width is 0.001" (crevice corrosion?). Elemental ...

( Is this potable water, or a heating system? Are you sure that it is 316? There are a number of crevice corrosion conditions that are worse for 316 than 304 \(or other non-Mo grades\). Some of these are related to microbiological activity. The Mo in the crevice liquid makes for a more aggressive fluid. With S I would suspect MIC. You should consider 2205 for this part. , )
