As has been mentioned above, the fuel guage isnt as accurate as it could be. In my Triumph for instance, the fuel light comes on everytime i go round a sharp bend, regardless of whether the tank is full or empty......... Ideally you need to know the car is empty, fill it up, zero your trip and then run it till it starts to cough through lack of fuel.
