May's life with her first husband was another time. Her life with Tom is marked by the tragedy of losing her children and then the joy of seeing them
back/again and the acceptance that they wouldn't be the same. So, it is playing on another level emotionally. If her life with her first husband was more
idyllic, her life with Tom is a more mature acceptance of fate but ...
I think it's an excellent sign that this script was wanted badly by FOX/Russell/Ridley Scott - and they would have paid her more than usual for a first
time script writer. And since this was first written in 2003, I would guess by now they would only make minor changes rather than dramatic ones. Lets hope none
of the romance part was taken out!
And I am thrilled to have a woman director. I ...
If anything, its that Russell Ridley tidbit that makes me feel pretty safe that this is a quality project from the get go. Then reading the script, I can
completely see why they'd be interested and that aggressive in getting it to happen. Thank you Madeline for not selling it!!!! And then to know that Toll
is on board for cinematography, I can't wait to hear who they get for score, costume design...
I need to read the script again ;)
What are some of the most powerful acting moments in the script?
One scene which left such a strong impact on me was the scene when May was fighting against the Indians who were trying to abduct her children. You can
practically conjure the image of a lioness fighting for her cubs!
And then there were the scenes showing young Tom growing up among his
adoptive tribe. As a boy, he showed such a stoic and tenacious
nature...these traits were probably ingrained in him as he grew up and
returned to white society.

Rachel has quite a few powerful moments, especially the ones with her children. For Hugh, I'm really excited to see him on his journey to find her
children. It may not seem like it would be powerful, but I think seeing Hugh struggle and all that will be interesting.
The only thing about his search that puzzles me a little bit is how he gets over his fever, does it just go away? I don't know I may be totally off with
this but he's fevering at the same time that May found his box of his past and she opens the thing of herbs. Is there some spiritual thing going on there?
Like there's a connection so strong between the two or am I reading too much into this? lol...
I thought the same thing about the spiritual stuff - like there was a "connection" there. Another part I really liked was when May showed Tom her
back scars for the first time, and there was another scene (I *think* it was different than this one although it may have been the same scene) where Tom runs
his fingers along her scars - picture that one!
I think Tom runs his fingers along her scars at the end of the movie, and when she shows him her scars for the first time, that's when he proposes to her.

Oh, Oh!...
I think you're right Hengist, that's really all that gets these types of films to be successful. To a certain degree its the stars and this movie has that, then it's the quality and praises. And you're right that this already has a lot going for it, when the project was announced everyone was looking at it as hot property and like you say, now it's seen as the underdog story. But that could be bad just because it...
What failed with AUSTRALIA in the American box office? Was it the way the story was told - too much jarring juxtaposition of comedy, drama, and interleaving history references? Was the movie too long? I'd say it's a combination of these two things - but I do really feel that Australia was loved by many people (it just had its flaws) With UC, like you said, the narrative will be more conventional and the tone will be more subtle. Baz...
I had forgotten that Hugh also has to learn Comanche, not just Rob, for his role as a white Indian interpreter. Coming from a Chicago accent and vernacular in A STEADY RAIN which immediately precedes the filming THE UNBOUND CAPTIVES, he won't really have much time to master the dialogue in Comanche language, does he? Unless that portion ( which occurs in the first part of the script) is filmed later on. What a coincidence - just like the...
I think this film will have the advantage of good will. It seemed there were a lot of people just waiting for Baz Luhrmann to be put in his place and for Nicole Kidman to prove her "box-office poison" credentials. Hugh, as always, was Teflon-coated. This starts with a good story of how the script was developed and the film was put together. That should be enough to get some cheering for the underdog It probably helps that the...
icelemt38 wrote: But then you have Rob fans that say Tom and Rachel's love story is not believable and the best parts are the Phineas parts and that he's not in it enough. Yep - plus they say they wanted MORE of the Phineas/Violet story. So I guess a lot of it is perspective and who you are a fan of.
Thought I'd just add my 2 cents. I think Australia was doomed before it even opened here in the US. It was trashed all the time in the media and there is a lot of negative feeling towards Baz and Nicole...I don't understand it but it's there. From what I saw of people's reactions, those that ignored the bashing and went to see it anyway or rented it when it came out on DVD liked it. I don't see anything in UC that...
