Thread: Sansui 551 sound distortion

Started 1 month, 1 week ago by Farnsworth
i just picked up a sansui 551 and love it. the problem is there is a little distortion in the sound. i notice a lot of crackling and noise especially during parts of songs that have a lot of high frequency. it was fairly dirty when i got and i cleaned it out a bit but did not do any extensive cleaning. i was wondering whether this could be fixed with a little more cleaning or if it may be ...

Thanks Grandma! Could be the crossovers too.

I agree, check the cross-overs. You probably need to de-oxit the crossover tone controls and a re-cap would probably go a long way. I would start with the tone- controls and go from there.

I picked this 9900Z last night from a local CL listing. Other than the analyzer level knob missing, it's in great shape! I haven't gotten inside of it yet, but I'll do that this weekend. It's my first Sansui & so far, there doesn't seem to anything not to like. It's on my test bench right now with some book shelve speakers, so I haven't really opened her up yet, but it's souding real good! Any ...

Are the dc/bias current settings the same for each of these receivers? Is 30mA the correct bias current setting for each?

Where do I get the service manual? (Without spending any money) I was poking around the decoder board last night and I found the noise on one of the transistors (2SC1312). The noise also changed whenever I moved it, so I replaced it with a 2N3904. Did the same thing for two other decoder transistors and it works perfectly now. I'd still like the service information for the FM tuner, the ...

Any guidance on mid 70s Sansui preamps? What to look out for, CA 2000 v.s. 3000 v.s. more modern, cost effectiveness, whether my AU 5500 is close to dedicated preamp performance, etc?

Yes, the output transistors could be bad, but that's not the first place to look. You need to measure the DC offset at a point before the protection relay. Tip the unit on it's side, transformer down and take the bottom cover off. There should be a blue and a gray wire coming out of the bottom of the power supply board. Measure the voltage between the chassis and each of these wires. If it's 40v or more, it's likely the...

The DC at the input of the Right channel is 11mV. It doesn't seem like there should be any DC at the input of the power amp. The left channel has 0.5 mV. What do you think?

The lamps don't care about + to -. Wire them in series and they'll be fine. There's lots of different styles of lamps. Have to know what you have in order to make suggestions.

So the DC on the output of the amp is 11mV? That is acceptable.
