Thank you David for this info, which is very pertinent nowadays. I hope others will share their knowledge and experience on this subject here too. When will emule include this feature?
VPN for eMule....interesting. I had considered it for torrents but I had never thought about it for eMule I might have to do some personal investigation, thanks for the info!
Nice to see there's an interest in this thread. I'm not the only one with these problems, it seems. If anyone finds any more VPN providers besides Ivacy which allow port forwarding, please post it here. I asked Ivacy if it is possible to set it up so that it uses MS-CHAP v2 (and avoid MS-CHAP v1, since this e g allows sending user name and password unencrypted !!! - read the link to ...
Sorry to ask this silly question, but... don't you get the vpn via your usual ADSL connection? Must you actually use the phone to dial to the vpn service? (if not, what's the dialer for?)
QUOTE(xylo9 @ May 17 2009, 02:11 PM) don't you get the vpn via your usual ADSL connection? No. Some ISPs require you to "dialup" to them via the PPPoE protocol, but that's not VPN. Virtual, yes. Network, yes. Private, definitely NOT. QUOTE Must you actually use the phone to dial to the vpn service? (if not, what's the dialer for?) No, no phone. It's a PPP over Ethernet. The ...
There are other VPN service out there: http://ipredator.se/ it is only in beta stage but is owned by pirate's bay guys. And I have also good feedbacks about SwissVPN http://www.swissvpn.net/ I have also suggested "relakks" in the past but I have not heard feedbacks about recently.
QUOTE(DavidGGG @ May 7 2009, 06:08 AM) I'm surprised no one has written anything here about the possibilities to use ED2K/KAD without the risc of the IP being visible. First, there is an alternative to eMule called iMule which apparently is similar to aMule and uses I2P for safety but apparently only supports the KAD part , not ED2K. it uses kad to connect, publish and ...

So if i understand it correctly, this vpn provider who wants 5 or 10$ a month will be a kind of proxy who will connect to the emule network on my behalf (in a sense) and encrypt the connection between me and him ? Surely there are ways to make every emule client behave that way, thus avoiding this proxy and this expense for everyone.
ZITAT(xylo9 @ May 18 2009, 11:26 PM) Surely there are ways to make every emule client behave that way, thus avoiding this proxy and this expense for everyone. Yea there is but not without significant overhead. Meaning you have to expect global download speed to go down by at least 50%.

And the risc up being visible a second or so per week I can take. * Using a firewall properly set up is a great idea and better than a monitor program from several points of view, however it is not so easy and most firewalls can't separate your own IP from your VPN IP, and not all want to...
I've tried Anonine now for 2 weeks and it's been amazingly stable for 13 days (then this morning there were some small glitches and right now the entire anonine.com site is down.. but I hope they will get back up soon since they are my first choice now). I can get impressive speeds (200-400kB/s up&down or so), however sometimes it is slower. At such occasions restarting VPN often helps. I've seen this effect 4 times now...
Regarding my test of Cryptocloud, it seems that they were experiencing some technical troubles, so they usualy work better than that. In meantime, I've tested "ItsHidden" (the paying version), and basicaly, they cost twice the price of IPredator and Anonine, but they are not better than them with Emule, nor with Bittorent, the only thing they seems better at is direct download. Indeed, I succeeded to get up to 200...
I suscribed to anonine.com With this VPN I could hit a peak of 1.0 MBps on a big torrent. My usual peak is 1.3 MBps, that's an acceptable loss of bw IMO. This post has been edited by Cobra SA : Yesterday, 10:47 AM
I got the EMule going now, working great! But, I still wonder about the port forwarding and VPN: Quote Also, can you please briefly explain to me about port forwarding from your VPN provider? How is that working, how can the VPN provider set up a certain P2P port to forward your VPN-assigned IP-address, assuming there are more than users of the same P2P in the same VPN network? Now i am testin Anonine (thanks DavidGGG): - in emule, my id is high BUT emule don't connect to clients with id low. Therefore my REAL ID is LOW. - the results for emule are similar to Ipredator. Few connections and total downloading speed of 15 KB/s. Why emule show me ID HIGH and then don't connect to clients with ID LOW. ??¿¿
