Out on my venerable Falcon yesterday which runs a SRAM PC-60 chain held together with the originally provided SRAM master link.
So while just riding along, cruising easy, the chain broke apart and unwound itself and came off the bike. A quick look showed that the master link simply came undone and fell out --and fell out cleanly, did not catch ...
You should take it back to your LBS and ask that they replace it for free. This could have caused a serious injury. If they are not willing to take responsibilty for it, I would threaten to take them to small claims court.
I've heard of this happening before and I don't remember anything much coming of the discussion. Either the link wasn't assembled properly or it's possibly overly worn. I'd highly recommend replacing it versus risking a crash due to a reoccurence.
I have been using SRAM chains for years, and this did happen to me, fortunately only one time. I was riding up a steep hill, clipped into my pedals when the chain suddenly came apart. The bike stopped quickly and I toppled over before I could unclip. After I got up and brushed myself off, I looked at the chain and saw that the master link had parted and was now so mangled it was...
I've had random disconnects on SRAM, Wipperman/Connex and KMC master links. Road and mountain. Older, newer, brand-new. The worst one was a well-kept SRAM PC-971, 2900 miles but still reading nearly new. It disconnected on a routine shift, whipped around my rear derailleur and sucked it into my wheel, snapping the derailleur's hanger bolt (an aftermarket aluminum one). Nice...
