Thread: SAN PEDRO - TEN YEARS ON

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by moogen
SAN PEDRO - TEN YEARS ON A decade ago, my husband and I got married in San Pedro, Belize. We're heading back this December for our ten year anniversary (our seven year old boy in tow). I'd love to know how the place has changed. We're Aussies. So we'd love to know if ...

San Pedro has changed a good deal in the past 10 years. In fact, most of the island has changed. You'll still recognize most everything, though. I can't always recall exactly when things happened on the island, but here's what I think will probably seem different to you: LOTS more cars, trucks, taxis. There are traffic jams occasionally, especially around the airstrip near Ramon's...

Wow. Thanks for that. I think I'm in for quite a surprise. Traffic jams! I don't remember seeing a car ten years ago.

There were quite a few cars on the island 10 years ago. Today, there are a lot more. One estimate is about 1,000, but that may be high. Anyway, it's a lot, given that the area where you can drive cars is only about 5 miles long less than a mile across, and there are not that many miles of roads. Currently, fortunately, there is a moratorium on bringing any more vehicles onto the island. --...

I checked out your website today. The information there is going to be an enormous help. Thank you.

My guidebook to Ambergris Caye and Belize's other islands is downloadable free in PDF from the web site. It's been a couple of years since I updated it, though, so some of the information is dated. I'm working on updating it now. Fodor's Belize, which I also do, will be out in the 2010 edition shortly from Random House/Fodor's. It has updated information on the island. --Lan Sluder

Cars?? my husband and I were there about 18 years ago. All I can recall are electric golf carts. The roads were all sand, with "sleeping policemen" speed bumps. We stayed at Paradise something or other and the best and (one of only 4 or so) restaurant was Elvie’s who required shirts, but no shoes. There was very little of anything outside of San Pedro.

The site of the old thatched-roof Paradise Hotel, where # 6 probably stayed (it's at the north end of Front St./Barrier Reef Dr.) is now a 30-unit luxury seafront condo called The Phoenix. Don't recall offhand what condos went for there, but in the range of half a million U.S. Dinner and drinks at the upscale restaurant at The Phoenix, Red Ginger, is around US$40-50 a person. --Lan Sluder

oh my, that was the place, all the local kids and many toruists swam off the town pier at the end of the property. there was only 1 small condo when we were there that was so new they still had not sold all the units. It was about 1/2 way between Paradise and Ramones. I think they were asking about 60K US and we were seriously considering buying one, but could not scrape the cash together....

For the Belize of 20 years ago, I'd suggest you check out Punta Gorda or perhaps Sarteneja. --Lan Sluder
