Thread: Returned to NZ Need Advice Re Broadband without the Phone and an Australian Modem

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by lissie
Hi Kiwi returning to Wellington after 3 years - a whole lot of stuff seems to have changed while I was away! I am basically going to be on the move for a few months as we evict tenants/ sell houses etc so I am really not sure what to do for broadband. Broadband is totally essential to me as I run a business from home. I don't wish to be tied up ...

TelstraClear speeds are either 4Mbps on the low end plans, 10 on the midrange and 25 on the top. I'm not sure where you saw the 2Mbps listed - this is however the upstream sopeed on all plans. If you do go with TCL however it is a cable solution so your ADSL modem will be of no use, you just need a basic router without the ADSL modem. Biddle Corp is powered by...

OK it was probably 4mps - either way really slow. So ADSL is in general faster than cable - I thought it was the other way around

Hi, most of wellington has now been cabinetised, which in laymens terms means you should be able to get good ADSL2+ broadband in most area which will give you speeds between 10-20Mb/s although most should see 15+Mb/s. If your Dlink has been giving you good speeds on ADSL2+ in Aus then it should work as well here, although depending on what firmware it has will determine a lot, its a ...

Thats a really useful link thanks Cyril - to be honest its not so much saving money on the phone line - its just so inconvenient having to change it everytime I move - I've had the same email address for 5 years so I don't see why I can't have the same phone number :-)

If you sign up for a VoIP line here in NZ you'll be able to get a number you can keep no matter where you move. Your number can be ported in or out of virtually any provider in NZ. Biddle Corp is powered by VFX trixbox Faktortel GB-PVR

sbiddle - the point is I travel a lot - I don't want a number that will work all over NZ - but one that will work all over the world - Skype seems the best option from comments from people who travel a lot - what's the advantage of having a NZ voip line?

A NZ VoIP number will work anywhere in the world just like your Skypein number. Unlike that however it can be ported to any provider whereas Skype numbers are unable to be ported and being SIP based gives you a much greater selection of hardware and software that you can use.
