Was that as good for you as it was for me?
Not really, Quentin. It launched your career and earned you a lot of fans well before "Pulp Fiction" came along, but it's not really all that great. Re-watching a film I'd seen once before in high school should prove interesting, but the movie was basically exactly what I remembered it as. Decent story, good characters, some superb dialogue, but ...
It's a good film with, like you said, interesting characters and excellent dialogue, but how people could say it's QT's masterpiece in the face of Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown is dumbfounding. It is a hip crime movie, but nothing approaches the brilliance he achieved with his next 2 films. It's not even as accomplished as Kill Bill, and I've yet to see Inglourious Basterds. When I was 15 ...
Like I just said in your other thread, everything about it strikes me as trying way too hard. Not terrible , but just not very good at all.
A screaming comes across the sky.
You're all on drugs. The movie rocks. Of course it isn't his best work, because it was his first! It's still a highly enjoyable flick.
Decent story, good characters, some superb dialogue
That's exactly what makes it a rockin' time.

It is a film that showcases his obvious talent for dialogue writing, directing and flair for music, and if you consider that it's his first film than it's really pretty great in my opinion. Not to mention it's the foundation for Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. Just a shame he's taken a step backwards since.

I pretty much agree. This was the only QT film I really wanted to see going in but I thought it was decent at best, helped along by a great cast.
"It's a joke. We'll laugh about it in the car."
I agree. He had his writing style already mostly mapped out, but hadn't realized his (greater) talents as a visual filmmaker.

Amazing debut film and one of his best. It f--ks about with the linear structure more so than Pulp Fiction but it does seem like a prototype to his other films as some of the scenes do not as effectively contribute to the narrative unlike Pulp where seemingly irrelevant conversations are all apart of building the story. For example, the conversations regarding McDonalds foreshadows the tension with Big Kahuna Burger and the foot massage, which...
I still rate it incredibly highly - it was a breath of fresh air in 1992 and has since produced a great deal of inferior contemporaries. You have to remember that this movie had an incredibly low budget - which is why it's cheap-looking. 9/10 'No need to stop being a lady about it, you'll be back on your knees in on time' - Melvin
