Thread: Remakes of Classic Films

Started 3 weeks, 5 days ago by Serpentine
Which ones do you think they've gotten right? Which ones were disasters? Were any not bad, but kinda pointless? Which ones would you like to see redone? Here's my assessment of the ones I've seen: War of the Worlds This is the one that made me think of it, cuz it's on right now. I may change my mind at the end of it, seeing as I've only seen it once before and it's only just started now....

I saw your post and had to join For me, the best remake of recent years has to be Halloween, the Rob Zombie version. A horror movie for horror movie fans, by a horror movie fan. However, there are some insane remakes in the pipelines. Clash of the Titans, The A-Team, Robocop, Nightmare on Elm Street(this one looks good, as the guy playing Freddie is Roschach in Watchmen, who's name escapes ...

I dunno how many of those count as "classics"

The Fly is probably the poster-child for the case of remaking classics. The original was interesting, but one dimensional and relied on stunningly terrible "special effects." The remake is a champion of the sci-fi horror genre. War of the Worlds... well I havent seen the original sadly, but the movie holds fairly true to a modernized version of the original book, which is quite good. ...

Peter Jackson's King Kong was good. Really good. The biggest problem with it was a too long intro, and that it so closely followed the original some people questioned why it was made. Of course if he had changed too much... See Fan Rage about LOTR.

The remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still was awful, awful awful. War of the Worlds was OK. Rumor has it that they're going to be doing a remake of Highlander. The fansite I saw this on had a report that the script was simply terrible. In general, I'm not a fan of remakes. The ones I've seen have very rarely been better than the originals and I just don't see why they can't come ...

John Carpenter's Thing from Another World (the Kurt Russell version) >>>>> the cheesy '50s original. The 2003 remake (aka "AvP") was just crap though... The original Day The Earth Stood Still kicks the Keanu version into touch. Original: Klaatu as merciful and humane Christ figure trying to awaken us to our own folly; remake: Klaatu as woodentop eco-griefer. Ditto for the 50s vs ...

Oooh! Snooty film talk! Can I play too? Fistful of Dollars An almost scene-by-scene remake of Kurosawa's classic Japanese Samurai film Yojimbo. Take the samurai, give em guns, and BOOM! You've got Sergio Leone. Watch both in the same stretch for added entertainment. Was also remade as Last Man Standing with Bruce Willis. For a Few Dollars More The Sequel to Fistful of Dollars, ...

Twelve Angry Men. The 1997 remake is excellent. I think it gives the original a run for its money, which is saying a lot. I did have one problem with the original, which was completely not its fault - it's extraordinarily hard for anyone under 40 to take Juror #2 completely seriously. It was only John Fiedler's second role, and he hadn't yet become universally-recognizable as the voice of...

The original King Kong movie was bad . Nuff said The remake of King Kong was decent, did a lot more with the concept. War of the Worlds the original was decent, but the Spielberg remake was better, although somehow sillier. Having seen three versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I still say the first wins hands down. The 70s era (maybe later, maybe earlier) one was decent, but the screaming noise they made was pretty bad. The latest one...

War of the Worlds Loved the original, thought the new one was acceptable, not some kind of offense to the original work, and it had some very cool elements itself, like the blood-growth stuff, but overall the original just felt like a better movie to me. King Kong Never saw the original, but thought the new one was quite good. Ooh, ooh! Battlestar Galactica Had to put it down, even if it isn't technically a film but a series, but...

Usually they have a plot that this interesting but the original director dropped the ball or no one remembers it. Films in...
