...yeah, so is it just me, or does everyone think they are really over priced??
Now I ask that, on site site, knowing that a good majority of members here have either BMW's or KTM's...both bikes that are pretty much outta my price range.
So, is the thought..spend a lot on a motorcycle...no problem spending a couple hundred dollars on a tent??
I found an REI somewhat local to me...so ...

I suppose its a matter of what type camping you plan on doing. For me, I am gonna just do basic state forest campgrounds..and nothing extreme. I guess my ...
Yes, REI is fairly expensive. Even with the end of year dividend, they are still more expensive.
BUT, if you are looking for high quality gear or a niche sport (rock climbing or kayaking) it's nice to have a brick and mortar store you can walk in and browse.
Also, it used to be the case that you could buy REI-branded gear that was equal quality to the high-end brands (Mormot, North Face ...
REI-- Return Every Item
Only kidding a bit when I say that. REI has one of the best return policies in the market place. If you don't like it take it back. No questions asked.
Plus I do tend to fall on the you get what you pay for in outdoor gear. Having worked in the outdoor industry for the past decade I am a bit biased.
That being said I have seen $400 tents shred in the wind (...
the local REI has the frickin' worst sales staff of any store i have ever been in (excluding a specific branch of Staples). there's better customer service at wallmart. 50 year old guys doing entry level sales jobs and trying to be "kewel" with shorts on in the middle of winter and guts hanging over their belts. real 'outdoorsy'. and since they have studied up on the product, they'll go off into ...
REI is expensive for sure. I like to look at what I am thinking of buying
and they usually have most of what I might be interested in. Hate to do it
but if you can find the type of item you want then look elsewhere on the
net you can find it cheaper and just as good. I know, shouldn't do that but
WTF, especially if the sales person knows less than I do about some stuff.
You'd have to buy a lot of...
REI is at least list price on everything. However when they have a sale, there are usually some good deals. The best thing is that you can actually hold the item you are thinking about & compare it to others. If I need it right away that is an advantage. Otherwise I may go to Cabelas or Campmor.
The one thing you will find there is quality - no junk. But you're gonna pay for that. Plus,...
Yeah, I guess it just comes down to economics. I was just amazed at how damn expensive all their stuff is.
In exploring my own tent research.....Amazon* to the rescue......first search comes up with many tents under $100, from good name companies, Eureka, Coleman, and Kelty. I am doing, or plan on, just basic camping....so I'll use what I have till it no longer serves the purpose or breaks ...
While I've never returned anything to rei, I love their policy and am willing to spend a little more to have it.
I didn't know squat about a tent I was buying, so they cleared a space and set it up in the store.
They have 20% off sales quite often and I try to time my major purchases with the coupons.
The year end dividend has subsidized more than one big ticket purchase.
The ...
Yep, they're expensive, but in most cases you get what you pay for. The tent you pictured probably wouldn't stand a chance on a windy-rainy night. The rain fly doesn't even cover the whole tent. Most cheap tents are not very rigid in high winds either.
I've slept blissfully in my > $200 tents in lousy weather while others with cheap tents are retreating to their cars in the middle of the ...
OK, big picture, I did not want to start this thread and have it turn out to be a motorbikers vs REI/environmentalists....etc. I started it, soley based on a financial angle...and at seeing the high prices that REI was charging for some items, that can be bought elsewhere, for lower prices. I think the thread achieved its goal, with many replies giving me a heads up, where to get the same or equivalent products, at other businesses. I...

You know, I have to agree. Someone who supposedly works for a business getting some comments from customers/potential customers who in turn bashes those very folks. Never dawned on him I am guessing that many of us don't need nor want something that cost a lot vs something very servicable at a much lower cost. Arrogance, perhaps, but certainly not very bright.

Evil eye from employees and customers alike. All I wanted was some smallish parts, camelbak valve, carabiners, rope, etc. Next stop was army-navy surplus. Half the price for the same stuff. And they have grenades, frag vests, mortar shells, knives, and gas masks I...

Hello everybody. My name is Mark and I'm a long-time employee of REI. Thank you to the majority who seem to be paying the compliments. I appreciate it. I'm also a KLR rider so to you other "cheap bastards" I say to you, as I also have to a few customers, it's all priorities. In other words we each decide what's important to us. And I try to say it and mean it in the nicest way possible. This sort of thread pops up...
