Thread: Recommendation for a HD Camera in a race car

Started 12 months ago by jstecher
So given TW's other post I searched around and found no one ever started a thread on what the best HD camera they found was for race cars. I am looking for one for this year as I am either buying a new lens for the chasecam to get wide screen but would rather get an HD setup for sh*ts and giggles. We all know we need something that can stand up to vibrations and take the typical abuse but ...

Well, I'll put this in here just to add to the archives, but I don't think it helps your case, John. I'm using a Panasonic HDC-HS9 with a .5x wide angle lens and have had excellent results (in a production car where the camera is mounted inside). I record to the flash drive, then transfer to the disk drive if I need to archive it (for the weekend until I get to a computer). Maybe you can ...

Thanks Mike and Jim. TW posed the Pano SD9 in the other thread and once again like your's Mike it works money in a sedan but doesn't do poo for me in an open wheel car. I thought about getting one of the cheap HD sport cams like http://www.amazon.com/Aiptek-1080P-D...0849835&sr= 1-4 but just am never sold on the fact it will hold up and more than likely I'll have to build an enclosure for on ...

Some good points, TW. I don't think there's much of an issue with the flip-out LCDs, though. Most of them can be turned 180* so that the screen shows when it is closed against the camera. This would expose your screen, but it wouldn't be in the wind. Let's be honest, John, I think you could put an IMAX camera 5 feet above your head and you wouldn't feel the difference.

Thanks for the suggestion I will check that out. As of right now I have weather stripping tape (that double sided tape) it really holds in the battery tight and does not wiggle. I like the idea of wiring it in though. Brandon

Can that zoom out any? For Wheel-to-wheel, I'd think that you'd want to include at least the fenders in the shot... and catching steering inputs is always good.

Post up the findings on the go-pro camera... I "broke" another camera at Daytona, and I'm looking to go down the full digital path. It seems that anything with any moving parts is really a failure waiting to happen in the race car. I spend far too much time on the rumbles I guess.
