is Mathews really that high? other than that the Peninsula is doing pretty well

It is indeed odd that Mathews is that high, considering that its population has been declining and is so far out as an exurb with the only major thing being a fishing industry.

I forgot to include Currituck County, NC: $52,893. North Carolina's MHI was $44,772.

Probably people that commute way out there, trying to escape the "city." Some other report showed that gov't related $$ is the top paying industry in Hampton Roads. It ranks higher than business executive pay on average.

I think Mathews also has an affluent retiree population, in addition to the local folk there

It's great that Virginia Beach, a City of 440,000 residents has that high a median income.
