Thread: Question about laxatives

Started 4 months, 1 week ago by Seawind36
I have a question that I hope someone can help with. Would 2-3 days of Sennasides every other week be considered excessive use of laxatives? I am considering talking to the pediatrician about it, but didn't want to make a trip if that wouldn't be a big deal. My grandaughter is 8 years old and her other grandmother gives her this every weekend she is with her Daddy. It causes my ...

Does your granddaughter have problems with constipation or is Other Grandmother (OG) just obsessed with "regularity"? Sheesh, some people need to get a life. If your granddaughter has chronic constipation, her parents ought to discuss it with her pediatrician and everyone ought to follow what the pediatrician recommends. If she's NOT constipated, they should also ask the pediatrician about...

IMHO, and just to be clear I am not a medical professional, but unless there is a medical condition AND the recommendation of a physician, there is NO reason to be giving an 8 year old laxatives (and a stimulant, habit-forming laxative at that - which senna is). If there is a constipation issue, the place to start would be food - increasing fiber - or even a fiber supplement.

Yes, she has issues with constipation. I am her guardian, although mom lives here as well and we do most things in agreement. There is no divorce, they just met my gd in Jan of this year. She was 8 y/o at the time. I have her on Benefiber and a probiotic, but the issue is still there. Her mother has the same problem and so did I. She is an extremely picky eater so the diet is a concern...

One of the best pieces of advice I got from the nurse who worked for my son's pediatrician was "let us be the heavy". If relative showed up with 3 kids with the sniffles and wanted to visit, you just said, "The doctor says we shouldn't expose the baby to kids with colds". The same applies here. Work with the pediatrician to find a way to manage her constipation. As you noted, your ...

It is not a good idea to ever use a laxative on a continuing basis. IT Will become Habit forming. As has been stated --I also think BM problems should be solved with Fiber foods as well as fiber supplements like Benefiber or other fiber therapy like psyllium husk powder!!. Harry

Thanks all! I took her in today for another issue and spoke with the ped while we were there. She also agreed that the Sennasides are not a good idea. She said she would prefer to see her take a larger dose of Miralax everyday than to use them. We now have some info to use with the other gm!

Sandwind36, The problem with MiraLAX it also is a laxative as you probably already know -- Polyethalene Glycol 3350-- powder solution, laxative. Produced and distributed by Schering-Plough a drug manufacturer. This same type of laxative is used for Colon Prep in larger doses -- one name it is called by is GoLytely-- used in the gallon size the day before having a colonoscopy. I ...
