Thread: Q and A with Stephan Conroy

Started 11 months, 4 weeks ago by bluedude
Anyone watching this on ABC right now? 9:30-10:30. Stephan Conroy trying to explain his proposed Internet filter. He goes on and on and in the end can't explain a thing. There's some worthy quotes in what he's said so far. When asked about the Queensland Doctor's website being mistakenly blacklisted: "I told you, it was the Russian mob!" Highly laughable. Poor Stephan is getting fried ...

QUOTE (bluedude @ Mar 26 2009, 09:06 PM) When asked about the Queensland Doctor's website being mistakenly blacklisted: "I told you, it was the Russian mob!" Your quote, and this thread, proves that most people only hear what they want to hear. Early in the show, Conroy explained, at some length and in a logical way, how the Queensland Dentist website got on the blacklist. ...

I'm against the filter, but they could change my mind like *that* if they made it opt in, or perhaps even better, opt out. Give me a choice, and I'm behind it.

QUOTE (just_some_guy @ Mar 27 2009, 12:28 AM) might be a good tool for a responsible parent Any responsible parent will: A) Not be a lazy shit and expect not have to supervise their children because someone else (the government) will. B) Already have some kind of net nanny program if they cant personally monitor their activity. Or did you say its a good tool for irresponsible...

It's ironic that you censored my post by quoting only half of what I said. I thought you claimed to be anti-censorship? QUOTE (just_some_guy @ Mar 27 2009, 12:28 AM) an optional filter might be a good tool for a responsible parent, as part of a broader internet safety strategy, etc . Underline added for the benefit of those who don't just read what they want to read. ...

Without having listened to the program, I am ill equiped to comment, however, I find the whole idea of a manditory censorship of the internet as damned laughable. This country is becoming increasingly over-policed, not just in law enforcement, but in everything. It seems that we are becoming subject to more and more rules and regulations as the nation gets older. I dont know about you, ...

QUOTE (just_some_guy @ Mar 27 2009, 01:28 AM) But it has to be said that some of the pro filtering panelists made good points that made me think an optional filter would actually be a good idea. For example, that the right to access information freely isn't the only right that needs to be considered in this debate. That an optional filter might be a good tool for a ...

I have no problem at all with an OPTIONAL filter, no matter what it includes (and that's obviously just from a personal PoV, not in terms of issues it may cause for ISPs). Hey, I probably WOULD use it were I a parent, not as a means of shirking responsibility, but as a means of limiting the content you have to be worried about, in the same way as my Trend Micro Internet Security has ...

QUOTE (just_some_guy @ Mar 27 2009, 12:28 AM) Frankly, some of the biased and blatantly misrepresentative commentary in this thread, just weakens the poster's credibility in opposing the filter. We are more likely to convince people of the problems with mandatory filtering if we come across less like ignorant kids sticking fingers in our ears, having a tanty "cause we just want ...

QUOTE (Leonid @ Mar 27 2009, 08:36 AM) Well. That's all lovely, but I'm going to ask you some very simple questions: 1. Of all things the Russian mob would do, why target the website of a QLD dentist? 2. Since child pornography is illegal, where is the legal complaint and case against this dentist with subsequent Russian Mob ruling - I can't find it. I'll give you some very simple answers. 1. The...
