Thread: Putting Username on Desktop or Menu Bar

Started 1 month ago by macosxhintsmp
I am a technology teacher who has lots students. I am trying to find a way to have the student's username either show up on their desktop OR show up in the menu bar like I have on my laptop when I have fastswitching on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

System Preference > Accounts > Login Options Click the check box that says "Show fast user switching menus as: " and select "Name". im on 10.6, should not be that different if you'r on older versions of OS X.

I know how to do that on a stand alone machine, the computers in school are all networked running off a server.

Can you be more specific? Do you want to set this preference on all accounts in one process? Are the user domains for each client on the server? What version of OS X Server and clients are you running?

We are using 10.5.8 for both server and client. The student accounts (documents, prefs, etc.) are all on the server. All software, is stored locally. I hope I am being clear. With so many students, I want to be able to see their name on either the desktop or toolbar in order to see who they are. I figured there is some way to pull their username to do this.

Are you running OS X Server edition, or just plain OS X...? I presume if the user accounts are hosted on the server, that you have OS X Server. You can use Workgroup Manager to set preferences for user groups very easily. Can I also ask what purpose achieving this will serve?

Right now, if I want to know a students name, besides asking , I have to go to the apple menu and see their username at the bottom by log out. I would like to be able to see their name at the top menu bar near the time like I do on my stand alone mac when fast switching is enable. If the name can not be on the menu bar, then on the desktop. I am running OSX server. I realize I can use ...

Where in workgroup manager would I put: defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences MultipleSessionEnabled -bool YES I am not a WGM expert. I use it for basic management. Will the script above achieve what I need?

you don't put that command into WGM, you use the managedclient.app in WGM. Then add that line in there after loading that plist file. A lot like this hint I posted on time machine... http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...80801104313 882
