Thread: Provera?

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by sarahlovesbryan
So, I called my doc to see if she could go ahead and prescribe the metformin for me without my coming in (I have an appt in Jan), to jumpstart my period. I have PCOS and have extremely irregular periods. The nurse talked to my doc and she has called in a prescription for Provera...not what I was expecting, and I don't know anything about it...anyone have experience with it? Does it just ...

provera is synthetic progesterone...you take it usually for 10 days and you should have a withdrawal bleed within 2 weeks. I have taken it several times...usually I bled 1-2 days after I completed the pills, and one time it didn't work at all. It can be different for everyone. I didn't notice any side effects while on it. Good Luck!

She was going to give me Provera once too (we have the same OB ) I ended up getting AF and not needing it but yes it just gets your cycle going. I think you take it for a number of days and then your cycle should start soon after. As far as I know there aren't many s/e. The only provera story that sticks out in my mind is when Kara (valleygirl) had to use provera to get her cycle ...

Sarah and Mandy, where do you live? I'm in Louisville and went to Total Woman when I was pg with Gabriel. As for the Provera, I took it once to induce AF and started bleeding after my 6th pill. I think I was prescribed 10 pills, so I didn't even need the entire dose. I don't think you take it every month unless you still have trouble getting af.

i've taken prometrium, which i think is the same?? i take it for 5 days and AF comes like clockwork 3-4 days later. i think if it doesn't come within 2 weeks after the last pill you take, you should call to let them know. sometimes it makes my boobs hurt pretty bad. and, take it before bed. once i took it with dinner, then had a glass of wine-holy hanna i felt tipsy!! definately do not operate ...

I've taken provera, too. It induces AF with a withdrawal bleed. Basically, it is artifical progesterone. You take it for 5-10 days (depending on what your dr prescribed) and you should get AF 2-14 days after you take your final pill. Once you bleed, your hormones can go back to cycling normally. You may want to call back and see if your doctor will allow you to start metformin again ALSO - ...

Ditto to what all the others have said. I have started AF anywhere from the 4th pill to needing a couple days after the last pill. I never O'd after taking it and I have PCOS. I used metformin and once I got up to 2000mg/day I got AF but never had a chance to O on my own with it since I went right into medicated cycles!

That's good to know... I'm suppose to take it for the last 10 days of my post-surgery estrogen... The estrogen dose is so low I still got AF right on time (day 28... more on time than it's been lately... which sucks since my post-op bleeding only stopped 5 days ago ) My "normal" cycle would be that I'm suppose to O only 3 days after the provera ends... my dr said AF will start a day or so ...

Thanks for the info everyone...and Tkeys, I brought up met several times on the phone to the nurses I spoke with, and they just kinda blew it off...it was kinda odd...she just said my OB wanted me to take provera. I have an appt in Jan with her, so I guess we'll talk more in depth then, since I figure she'll probably put me back on Clomid anyway (I was on 100 mg when I got pregnant w/...

Karen - I did an estrogen/progesterone combo after my surgery (to rebuild the lining) and my cycle started over when AF arrived after the last provera. You'll call that day one, and you should O your normal number of days later.

Tkeys replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Sometimes, I think those nurses don't really get the full message - like yes, provera to induce AF, but without the met, it could happen again either next month or the month after! So they translate either half your message to the dr, or half of what the dr says back. GRRR! I'm sure your appt in Jan will give you all the answers, and if you are lucky, you'll have good luck like Kara did and ...
