Thread: Problem with charging system, 1997 Ford Econo-Line - Crownvic.net

Started 3 months, 3 weeks ago by BVBV
Please help! I have a 1997 Econo-Line Van in which all the power went out while driving all of a sudden. The engine cranks but won't start. The alternator checked out fine at AutoZone. The serpentine belt looks good. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Fuel pump run briefly when you turn the key to run? Didja hit a big pot hole before it died? Alex.

4.6? When the vehicle cut off, did the warning lamps (ie battery) come on or did the entire electrical system cut out with it? Was it a quick, sudden shut down or did it stumble at all? If it stumbled, you most likely have a fuel issue. Check fuel pressure at rail, reset inertia switch, swap relay, check fuse, etc. You should faintly hear the fuel pump "whirr" for just a second or two when ...

82K on van Throws no codes Battery less than a year old. Did not hit a pothole. Happened on rainy night with lots of lights and wipers on. It did stumble a few seconds. I can't hear the fuel pump whirl. The CEL light does come on when ignition is turned from OFF to RUN. The CEL light goes out while cranking. Sound like the fuel system or fuel pump? Really a dangerous event to happen. No ...

My Jeep has done this before. Is the lead on the battery and the connectors corroded? It happened to my Jeep twice and made it impossible to start. That sounds just like the same thing that happened to be twice.

Fhajad: The battery cranked the engine strongly, even though the battry connections were corroded?

Fhajad replied 3 months, 3 weeks ago
@BVBV Mine did that if it found a path for flow. I recommended it cause that was exactly what was wrong when I had this issue.

OK. Found a blow 30 amp fuel pump fuse blown. Does that mean the fuel pump needs replaced?

Fhajad replied 3 months, 2 weeks ago
No. Just the fuse, that's what it's there for. Just put in a new fuse and it should run unless another fuse has been blown.

Thanks for the help Fhajad. Any idea why the fuse may have blown though? What's the likelyhood the next one won't blow real quick? Thanks again

Checked the inertia swith, it did not need reset. Changed the relay. Put in a new fuel pump fuse. Tried to start it. It cranked strong, but did not start. Fuse blew. :((((((( Sounds like a short in the pump or a bad pump to me. Any other suggestions? Thanks to all who responded.
