battery, alternator or other???
Of course it is Sunday of a long weekend and my Ody breaks down. Dealership doesn't open again until Tuesday and we had to find a rental (did I mention the long weekend?!?) that would fit a family of 6...
At least it gives me a day to seek some good advice from the Odyclub forums! Here's the history:
99 Ody EX with 274,000 kms. For the past ...
Lets see...
Its not JUST the battery. If it were, the alternator should be able to run the car just fine after the engine starts. Even at idle, there should be enough power coming from the alternator to run the car.
You have some evidence of some bad stuff going on under the hood. Remove the alternator belt and see if the noise goes away. If it does, simply replace the ...
Thanks for the response SuperDad. The belt routing does include an idler pulley. Perhaps this is causing the low alternator output.
If the idler pulley is at fault, would it be congruent with the whine I have been experiencing? For example, would the idler pulley whine change pitch with increased rpm?
Thanks again,
Vanguard
Yes, since the idler pulley is spun by the belt, and the belt speed is determined by the engine speed.
My first guess would be that the idler pulley is fine and the alternator is resisting strongly. You should be able to tell easily once the belt is off.
If you are lucky, maybe you can actually see the low-or-no speed of the alternator pulley with the engine running. Its ...
Hello Vanguard,
I could see the alternator going bad, and as it goes down it takes the battery with it.
I would suggest starting with a new, fully charged battery, then troubleshooting the alternator after that. The alternator has brushes in it. When they wear down you can sometimes see them revive for awhile, then go to intermittent, then fail. When the diodes fail, there...
I'm pretty sure there are no brushes in these alternators, and the only thing spinning is a set of magnets. There are certainly no brushes on the parts list. Can you imagine how fast they would wear down?
Anyway, I went and looked at our Ody. It looks like the AC is also being driven by the same belt. Are you having AC problems as well? I don't think it really matters to the ...
I have not noticed any problem with the AC and we have been using it daily. I had started to think that the whine I am experiencing is the AC compressor clutch bearing as detailed in this thread:
http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showt...;threadid=45 509
Truth told, it could be any bearing or component driven by this belt. The whine is affected by rpm, so that at least points to a ...
On my 2002, there appears to be only three things driven by the belt. They are the AC, altermator, and the idler pulley.
There is at least one more belt in there(PS), and it would of course run related to the engine speed too.
Note that just because the AC is still working, you can't count the alternator as good. it is possible that the belt is sliding by the alternator pulley ...
Sorry for the late response.

I just sow a posting for exact issue I had . ( on same model / year too) .
he did fix it himself by cutting the pipe and welding with appx 130 in parts .

Well the $800 is for the timing belt replacement, new water pump etc. And a coolant flush and oil change (which they did not do because there was no compression after they replaced the timing belt) These costs were costs that I was going to incur as normal maintenance. However failure happened first. These costs will get transferred to the new (used) engine with just a bit of additional labor for doing it twice. I went this route because if...
Your description is a little cryptic, but it seems that sometimes you shift to Drive but the van doesn't move. So you shift to Neutral then back to Drive and then the van moves normally. Next time it happens, note if the transmission indicator light on the dash shows D. If not, your shift cable may need an adjustment or the transmission range switch may be failing.
automatic sliding door Sooo, what do the gold contacts do? Or just for the lights to be on or off? Thanks to all that replied with suggestions. LOVE THIS SITE!!
It's possible that if the switch has plastic snaps/locks around the switch (looks like it would be easy to take apart), you may try removing the back cover of the switch and see if the bulb is internal. I know some of the Odyssey switches are made that way...but have never taken any of them apart. Although...I've done that on other vehicles with similar desiged switched.
