Thread: Portugal River Cruise

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by zuriga
Has anyone recently taken one of the river cruises in Portugal? The idea of travelling down the Douro River is appealing to me. Are there any large, luxury ships that are the best, more reliable companies etc.? Thanks!

I have not taken the river cruise, but have travelled and hiked along the Duero and it's magical. I did meet a lady in one of my travels who said the river cruise in the Duero is one of the most beautiful cruises she's taken. When I went to Porto I had a suggestion from a2lopes to stay in Pinhao. The train from Porto to Pinhao goes along the Duero. I stayed at Vintage House in Pinhao, ...

A year ago I did a cruise from The Danube Delta in Romania to Nuremburg. It was organised by Noble Caledonia and were were very pleased with all the arrangements, the ship and the srvice. We have considered doing the Duero River cruise with the same compant - when we have a suitable opportunity. Here is their link - http://www.noble-caledonia.co.uk/tour/tour.asp?tou rname=along+the+river+of+...

Yes - it is a good area to travel on terra firma too - but there is something different and special about travelling along a river in a boat!

My husband and I will have to do some thinking about this. He much prefers travelling around by car and doing his 'own thing.' I like the idea of a cruise as I've only been on one before - the Alaska experience. I feel like Columbus discovering a new territory. :-) We've only been to Lisbon, and I'm anxious to see more of Portugal.

If it will help, here are some of my photos of the area: http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLanding.action?c= 14rwcnk1.8neppfe1&x=0&y=1dj3ht&localeid=en_US It was raining up in Guimaraes so the first 20 or so photos are darker. The Douro photos start around 44, ending with some of the VT meet in Cascais. The Vintage House arranged for the guided hike at Quinta de Tecedeiras.

Zuriga - I understand - we were both very anti-cruise and have not become "cruisers". Neither I nor my husband could bear to be on a ship with hundreds/thousands of passengers - ideally a maximum of 300 is OK for us. On the Danube cruise ( our 4th cruise but 1st River cruise) there were no more than about 130 - which reduced to 98 when some people who were only booked as far as Vienna left...
