Thread: Polyurethane molded mallets

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by TBourne
I make musical instruments and mallets to play them with - a customer is asking or glow-in-the-dark mallets. My mallets are made with a polyurethane 2-part mold process and I am wondering what I might add to my translucent mixtures to make them GITD. Green and red are the common colors. Here's a picture of the mallets: http://www.bournemarimbas.com/mallets.html Thanks, Tom

You would want to use the V10 powder that is available here http://glowinc.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=3 It is the brightest and longest glowtime around. You won't be disappointed. I promise! Just add it to your mixture before you pour into the mold. ab

Thanks much, I just ordered it - now I am new to this, so will have a dumb question or two for onstance: does this powder dissolve into the liquified urethane medium, or does it remain granular, suspended in the medium? Thanks, Tom

TBourne replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
oh, I finally comprehended the product description, it looks like it does not dissolve unless the medium is water-based. Will be interesting to experiment with....

Abbeytoo replied 1 month, 2 weeks ago
actually it doesnt dissolve, ever. I remains in its original state. I have used it many times with urethane and other mediums and it works great. You don't 'see' the grains, it pretty much turns the medium opaque. the glow is our of this world! Your mallets will look awesome! Can't wait to see pics....you will be posting pics, won't you? Oh, I just thought of something. I havent played ...

OK, that is very helpful info, thanks much. The urethane we use sets pretty quick, so I will suspect that there would be not too much settling. Will be curious to learn how much of the powder is needed to achieve god results.

I was afraid you were going to ask 'how much to use' I eyeball it when I use it, no set amount, I realize that is no help to you tho....maybe someone a bit more exact than myself can step in here and give you a clue.

Yeah, and I didn't feel like getting into dimensioning this item, etc. and expecting some definitive response. Dyes are involved too, too many variables - for instance, the maker of the urethane we use suggests not adding in quantity any more than 3% of the total mix, but if this powder is suspended, not dissolved, seems that will not matter - we'll see!

TBourne, I am sure once you get to playing around with this stuff you will have plenty of ideas. I was thinking you may want to drill and fill on the wood blocks so they can be seen by the musician in the dark. Just a small dot should do it. Also have a look at this charging station device made by Lambda. Something like it could work very nicely for the mallets.

this might open a huge can of worms, and in some ways I hope it does, but can anybody help me out with some ideas for Timpani Sticks / Mallets? Im looking for some new sticks so any help on manufacturer, style, size, price would be great. Many thanks
