I liked the pace and themes of the film, and I'm always a sucker for a good moral dilemma, but this just made me mad.
Like most people I agree that bending (or even breaking) the rules is sometimes necessary to do the right thing, but how on earth could Doyle et al justify what they did?

Watch a little closer next time.
Patrick and Angie weren't portrayed as street toughs. The guys in the bar weren't afraid of Patrick until he pulled a gun as last resort.
Lionel and Bea watched out for Amanda. The only reason Lionel took Amanda away was because Helene was about to suddenly leave town, and he would not be able to watch out for her.He was racing against the clock late at night.

regarding your points:
1) Patrick and Angie weren't portrayed as street toughs
I dropped this in as note at the end, and perhaps should have elaborated: I recognise that Patrick and Angie aren't supposed to be 'toughs' but the film still portrays them as people with an intimate knowledge of, and connection to, a community that seems divorced from the lives that Patrick and (especially) ...
But Helene did "clean her self up".The woman at the end of the movie is a lot more cleaned up than the woman she was in the begining. Is it enough of a change
for the viewer maybe not,but at the end she is cleaned up,not on drugs(she only drinks now),her house is much much cleaner. The movie(nor does the book)reveal whether or not Dottie would have come right over to babysit if need be.
On point ...
yeah, the movie serves up the final plight of amanda as a moral dilemma and that's what it is - without taking sides from my perspective...
just because you see it one way and believe your point of view to be right does not negate the fact that other people have their own reasons for believing something else...
and i have to tell you that mentioning your occupation in child protective ...
"- Two dead police officers and a maze of deceit and cover-up implicating the captain plus the girl's uncle - I know all this couldn't have been predicted but the web of deception must have been expected."
When officer Poole died it had absolutely nothing to do with Amanda. Remy let a detail slip, which is why he died. Had Remy not told Patrick that he knew Lionel before, Patrick would have ...
I'm glad you posted this. I'm not a US citizen or social worker so I'm glad to hear your insights. I did think the plot was fanciful and clearly constructed with a view to presenting its final dilemma.
I do agree with you that shooting the paedophile would have been a more convincing dilemma to present but that said I suspect most people would be a lot less conflicted over this than the ...
