Thread: Please explain "trolling" problem

Started 3 months ago by Ellaisgood
To all who can stomache a brief (non-technical) explaination of the "trolling" problem. I have not been on the boards for months. Last night was my first look-see of what is being discussed. It seems to me that a lot of conversation was about trollers who have been on the site. What is a troller? What do they do? yes...I am that ignorant about the ...

A troller is someone who fishes from a slowly moving boat. I have no idea what that has to do with a message board, or who would ever do such a thing.

FredCDobbs replied 3 months ago
In internet terms, a ?troll? is someone who comes on a message board mainly to cause trouble, or it?s a person who comes on a message board to chat but winds up fighting with people. A really bad troll is someone who comes on a message board and posts such offensive messages from the very beginning, he or she is usually banned right away. Other trolls might ...

I should like TCM to explain the trolling problem.

TCMWebAdmin replied 3 months ago
I saw this on Wikipedia and believe it offers a good explanation: "Application of the term troll is highly subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial. The term is often used as an ad hominem strategy to discredit an opposing position by...

I believe you left out the first sentence in the Wikipedia definition: In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise ...

Fred, Another problem is called "flooding" and is described as: "When a tr*** attacks a message board, he generally posts a lot of messages. Even if his messages are not particularly inflammatory, they can be so numerous that they drown out the regular conversations (this is known as 'flooding'). Needless to say, no one person's opinions can be allowed to ...

Yes, I remember a few of those during the past several years.

hence the often-seen warning: "Please do not feed the trolls"." Of course.... one would have to acknowledge the existence of trolls on a message board if they were to make a suggestion to legitimate posters to "Please not feed them"...

FredCDobbs replied 3 months ago
One problem I?ve seen on this board is that some ?trolls? troll only certain people, and they are actually friends with other people. So they are not universally seen as being trolls. For example, I?ve seen threads about someone who was called a serious ?troll? by several people, but I, personally, never found that particular person to be a troll at all. I can?t even ...

I think this leads me to recall something I have already mentioned elsewhere. Without a clearly defined "rule" on what is and is not a troll... (or what does or does not "constitute stalking" for that matter) it is up to an individual to fend for themselves if they truly DO believe they are the target of this sort of poster. (And by the way, posting a ...

My dear Mr. Dobbs, it was never my intenet to lecture you or anyone else here, but merely to respectfully express my own opinion (which you and everyone else on here are are certainly entitled to do as well). So if you read my post in any other way, then please accept my most humble apology as the claims you make were not my intent. And please do not feel obligated to respond to this as I see no point in going on and on and on. To free you...

So, from the point of view of the Web Staff, I think there might be some reason to question the need for additional rules, when so many of the people who have been here for years regularly violate existing rules. A few years back we had a sticky called "Rules of Etiquette" that was easy to understand and on the main page of the forum so that everyone could refer to it when in doubt about the rules. That sticky disappeared in one of...

Lynn, None of the suggestions you make seem "draconian" to me, although I think the one about "flooding" should definitely apply to groups, and not only individuals. There are certainly threads that sometimes go completely off-topic, and are sometimes full of rather inane posts, sometimes discussing things that have little or nothing to do with the thread topic (or even with classic movies), and sometimes it may appear...

Your mail box may have been spared, Dobbsy, but your long-time neighbors' mail boxes have not been. It's not one person, it's not two people, it's not five, it's close to twenty who have issued complaints against one member. May I ask you a question? If you knew some people had you on "Ignore" and didn't wish to speak with you, would you continue to post around them the most? What would be your purprose...

Oh, pshaw Patful. - from a soon-to-be-deleted post I know, but responding in a serious manner is just playing into his/her hands, and will just result in more edited/deleted posts and more anger. Just what he/she wants, no?

How do you all feel about trolling can be a crime punishable by doing jail time. I've seen a couple of sites pondering this question. One is http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20090505/1244544756.shtml What exactly is the law today on the subject. Would it help us here at TCM? According to Bloggerblog.com it is a crime. Has it been struck down since it was introduced in 2006? I know putting a troll in jail might put a damper on his or her...

To answer EllaIsGood's original post, the troll that has purposely harassed certain members on this board does so by constantly looking to post around these members and constantly looking to bury the posts of these members. This troll is fully aware of certain members being upset at them and having them on "Ignore," yet they continue to harass them. This begs the question, why? Why would someone wish to be around those who...
