YAY - finally (hopefully) I can use my PS3 to play *all* the Freview HD content I record on my MythTV backend, not just TV3. I won't even bother with buying a PlayTV device, not when a dual DVB-T tuner for my PC is around half the price.

ONe thing I don't understand, is why freeview HD EPG is so bad? It just does not work. For example, windows media center the epg does not work either. And, the other thing, audio. It seems there is very limited support for the audio format the wiseheads chose for freeview. NZ is too small to be setting the standards. I wonder if this was some way to gain exclusive market ...

stroke64: LATM isn't that rare these days. Not as rare as it used to be, but you could probably name more famous Belgians than countries that have adopted HE-AAC audio!

While I'm on it, the other 'benefits' of freeview approval are no HD out via component, can't transfer a recorded show to anywhere else, limited connectivity via ethernet/usb connections even if the hardward is on the unit, limited forward skip function (usually fixed at like 10min jumps forward) and capped fast forward speeds whilst whatching recorded shows in addition to the no EIT ...
You can get PlayTV to do those things though, apparently by setting region to "other", its only if you select Australia that you get those "freeview approval" restrictions put into place.

I don't have the black bar thing. It has been mentioned a few times but always seems to come back to one of the TV settings. Yes Manual recordings and some prime recordings for me don't seem to add the EPG name info to them. It's been mentioned elsewhere so hopefully is address if/when PlayTV officially comes to NZ. Really who cares how it was recorded, more it should show the name of what it is. Hard Drive Screws, mine...
Well I have never encountered stuttering on my Play TV but do get the occasional pixellation in the picture but I attribute that to the reception I have since it occurs on recordings I make with gbpvr (same aerial connection) and on live broadcasts (using a DVB-T tuner and same aerial). But this is a 60G drive only and I am planning to upgrade to a 500G. Is WD still the flavour of the month here?
I bought mine from Currys. I'd say it's worth it to save $30-40. But I don't have to get it shipped here which is the difference I suppose. I probably wouldn't bother otherwise. Still, I don't think shipping could be more than the $30-40, depending on the option you choose so you may still save a few bucks.
I'm at work so I can't check the auction right now - out of interest how much are they askng? New post at the blog 07/05/2008 - Nokia Maps Updates NZ maps data!!!! Symbian fan? Check my Blog - why not contribute while you're there?
lackie: @don't panic42 re. black border issue I am having a similar border issues to you and pjshark, different television though: my PlayTV and PS3 are outputting via HDMI to a Panasonic TH-42PY800AZ. When PlayTV is running the picture has a black border on the left2cm wide, and around the other three sides just under 1cm. The screen is full HD, native 1080 pixel resolution. BluRay discs and PS3 games all fill the screen completely...
FYI: Screen with black outline After much playing around I have found that on my Bravia tv I can display the input at 'Full Pixel', or normal. With Full pixel selected I receive the black outline. In normal mode it displays fine. Hope this helps others with the same issue. On a side note I thought I would record the Football (soccer), TV1 @ 10:45. I have noticed a lot of pixelation and stutering. I did nothing else but watch it as...
They asked for me to prove my address I was getting it delivered to by me sending a Utiltities bill or alike.. as I'm getting it send to work.. I had to give them a nice long explanation..
lackie: Great summaries and testing brave people. Been waiting SO long for this - I'm convinced and finally ordered. I went with the $145 option from MyMemory (presently £62.95) to get the 1 year guarantee and peace of mind over other cheaper options on eBay. Can now sleep again. Another point that occurred to me (which could help others get over hesitation to order from the UK) was that it is powered by the USB: so no power...
