Thread: Placido Polanco

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by danks50
The more I think about this I really want this guy on the southside next year. Looking at some of the major problems on last years team, a lack of fundamental baseball knowledge (i.e. Jayson Nix in a rundown with 2 outs while the runner at third scores), poor defense (the 2nd basemen platoon of Nix/Getz/and rarely used Lillibridge combined for 15 errors at 2nd base), or lack of offensive ...

I would love to get Polanco or Orlando Hudson. Getz isn't the long term answer IMO.

& just to add, probably my ideal situation of adding Polanco and Abreu would really transform this offense. Getting two experienced players with good doubles power, excellent discipline and good speed would likely do wonders for our poor run production. On top of wearing down pitchers, and offseting some of the hackers in our lineup. I'm doubtful that both these guys could fit into next years ...

No one including Kenny wanted Hudson last year and a gold glove 2nd basemen signed for pennies on the dollar with the Dodgers. Maybe Kenny wanted to see what he had with Getz and/or Nix, but I'm really hoping if he has any room in the payroll he tries to go after one of Polanco/Hudson/ or even Iwamura if his option isn't picked up. I'm higher on the first two but would love the offensive/...

Yup that is what I have been saying all along about Getz. His ceiling is mediocrity if even that.

Getz was one of the better rookies in MLB this year. The kid can hit at the MLB level, he is the most consistent base thief the sox have, and wants to put some weight on to be more of a 10-15 HR guy. If the sox had unlimited money, they should consider bringing in a veteran to help out in the infield. But there is limited money, and the sox only have one starting outfielder that is ...

Chris Getz 10-15 homers a year??? Are they moving the fences in about 30 feet around the cell?

Upgrade at 2B is about 6th or 7th on the priority list. Getz showed great maturity in the end of the season. The only thing wrong with him is that he seems to be injury prone. Another OF, LH bullpen pitcher, and back up catcher are the three most important needs. Abreu wouldn't be bad, I suppose, but I'd rather have someone with 30+ HR capability.

Yea you hit it on the head here. Sure we could definitely use an upgrade at 2nd but with young internal options atleast holding the fort down at that position we have much more important needs. As we have really all been saying DH, Corner outfielder, and bullpen help should rank as more important then 2nd base.

If the Sox had Yankee money, they could go for Polanco. But they do not.

Compared to what, the weakly hit .260 Getz brings to the table with literally 0 power and poor defense? Polanco brings everyday stability, vastly superior defense, and the ability to wear down a pitcher and hit 10 hrs with around 30 doubles to the table. Getz brings DL stints, below average defense, and the ability to pop up or weakly ground out to the right side. On a down year Polanco still a sizable upgrade.

Exactly. Getz isn't a great player, nor will he ever be, but should be given the opportunity to be a solid player. Other than concern over injury, I think he can be.

We will see. Planco would be the only free agent 2B I would want the Sox to consider, and that is only if the price is right. Otherwise go with Getz this year. If he can't stay healthy then we need to move on. If he does, he needs to show some improvement or I think the Sox will look to replace him in 2011.

What you're forgetting about Getz is that he's still young at 26. He still has room to improve, and become the high average, great baserunning, solid defender that the scouts seem to think he can be. Is he going to be the next Joe Morgan, probably not, but he hit .262 with a .324 OBP this year. Those aren't horrid numbers out of the number 9 spot. He's still adjusting offensively and defensively, but all in all, for a...

Going after Polanco would be stupid. He's clearly in a decline and 2B is not an issue for the Sox at the moment. Polanco the last 3 seasons (including 09): 2007: .341/.388/.458 .846OPS 122OPS+ 2008: .307/.350/.417 .768OPS 102OPS+ 2009: .285/.331/.396 .727OPS 89OPS+ You figure that Polanco would want a multi year deal, and it becomes totally pointless. One, there's no reason to think Polanco's decline won't continue; two,...
