Thread: Pistons fire coach Michael Curry after 1 season

Started 5 months, 3 weeks ago by BenJamin
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Pistons have fired Michael Curry after he went 39-43 in his first year as a head coach. Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a statement Tuesday that while it was a difficult decision, he has "decided to make a change." The Pistons opened the season with high hopes but couldn't recover from the loss of All-Star point guard ...

Dumars is smarter than that.

I'm amazed at Dumars' reputation as being one of the best in the business. He's made a ton of mistakes.

Avery's "Aw, shucks, cornbread" would last about 10 minutes in Detroit. I doubt he gets even the courtesy interview. Many will long remember his brushoff of the Memphis job as being 'beneath him'. No doubt, that will resonate in Minnesota as well. He's just waiting for Pop to get hit by a bus, and might even get behind the wheel to hurry it along.
You know, at some point, it all has to stop being Michael Finley's then Shawn Bradley's then Avery Johnson's fault. Avery did things that made me crazy too, but you don't get the the Finals and then tear up the league in a 67-win by accident. It was clear that Avery needed to go, since the team and he had fractured beyond repair, but for a couple seasons, the Mavs were the best they have ever been. Avery...

Exactly, because he also knew DET could only tolerate about 2 years of the Little General . Then, when things mature, get a real coach.
Dumars says they are about where they are when they hired Carlsisle and they don't need a 4-5 million dollar coach.  Guess that means he wants some cheap guy to coach for a year or 2 then if they are looking good, he'll dump his cheap coach for a high priced coach.
Looking at it this way and with the perspective of Carslile, who the hell wants this job?
Very passionate Venger, but with all due respect, what are you talking about? I don't recall blaming anything on Avery, or Finley, or Bradley.
This was not aimed at your post, more just the general board miasma regarding Avery - and the Mavs fate in general. There's been a tendency to place all of our faults disproportionately at the feet of one person or another - Finley was a favorite target, because...
And the Ego keeps him out another year...
I think it has more to do with the fact that Detroit was only offering a 2 year contract instead of the 3 or 4 years that are customary. I'd know I'd want a longer guarantee from a team that only gave its last coach a year before they fired him.
