Fiat Terminates Chrysler's All-Electric Car Plans What's Going to Happen to the $73 Million Gov Grants for the EV Test Fleet? Just over a year ago, the Chrysler Group's newly formed Envi division unveiled a series of production-based electric cars that it planned to put on sale. Fast forward a few months, Chrysler went in and out of bankruptcy, sealed a deal with the Fiat Group and then,...

Despicable. I hope the US gov't goes after that money. Even if it costs more to get it back, just on principle alone.

I'd say right off hand, it's being directed to the DNC for the elections next year. They're gonna need it too.

They secured the grant, but that doesn't mean they actually received the cash. The grant awards were to be spread over 2-3 years. Additionally, if you read the grant it's hardly free money. 50% match from private sources and a list of deliverables that must be met otherwise the funds will stop or they'll have to be returned. The grant with Chrysler was for them to "provide 220 advanced plug-...

Plug-in electric vehicles are still not viable in most of the US. Furthermore, if too many get sold it will tax the already overloaded electric grid. Florida needs massive amount of electricity for desalinization of sea water before plug-ins, just one example. Want to mandate better fuel economy? Mandate maximum horsepower limits. Granted it will not be popular but over time the same HP will ...

Easy to beat: engines will simply be "derated" via the ECM...I could derate my Magnum to 200HP...and return it to 340 with the click of a mouse.

Off topic a bit but why does GM derate the 6.0 gas engine (312 hp v. 360 hp) in the duallies and chassis cabs? I'd think you'd want more hp in a vehicle that has a higher GVWR.

It's not all in the tune either, it likely has a different cam as well.

Smaller trucks (3/4 and one ton pickups) more than likely don't have the space neccessary to accomodate the cooling needed for a 360HP gasoline engine in meduim to heavy duty use....

Gearing will also make a huge difference in these applications. Most heavier trucks get lower gearing than the lighter trucks.

The more power being produced, the more heat being rejected from the engine.

HD trucks have had lower HP ratings for years. The ratings are for continuous use. For EX: A 260HP vortex in a K1500 will not be able to continuously run at its max HP level. However a 3500HD rated at 240HP is designed to run at max power for long periods. Most HD engines also have sodium filled exhaust valves while the 1/2 ton models didn't. Sodium valves good for heat, not so good for sustained high RPM. Even the new 360HP diesels do...

Makes sense to me. The Superduty I used to maintain had insulation around the batteries - heat must have been an issue. Peak torque on both 6.0L motors is the same and developed at the same rpm. Must be that fully loaded, the higher GVWR dually and chassis cab generate more heat.
