Thread: Phelps wins Sportsmen of the Year

I thought the Celtics had it locked up... until Phelps went and won 8 golds.  Figured it would come down to those two.

Excellent.  They made the right choice. Kind of hard not to choose the greatest Olympian in history.

Excellent.  They made the right choice. Kind of hard not to choose the greatest Olympian in history. I suppose.  Also hard to pick against a team that provided the greatest one year turnaround ever... even if it was completely revamped, which makes it all the more impressive to win a title the right way.  There's also an argument that a team that was tested over the course of an entire season...

if the pats wouldn't have choked in the super bowl would have easily been them     Nah.  I don't think anything was going to trump Phelps record breaking Olympics.  Not when they are only played every 4 years.

Believe it or not, these guys are in constant training.  They don't just show up at the Olympics and jump in the pool.  Yes, I am aware of that... I almost included a caveat saying I know there are trials, trainings, etc.... but the same goes for basketball players.  And either way, it essentially comes down to that one race (or 8) in the Olympics.  All that stuff is behind the ...

I fully support Phelps as the sportsmen of the year but i think his 8 golds are slightly overrated. Think about it, they are all for swimming. If it was possible to win 8 different basketball titles in one year, the Celtics would have done it as well, but there is only one. I'm having trouble explaining what i mean but maybe someone will get it. You explained it fine. It's no coincidence that Phelps 8 gold medal record broke the...

Yeah, but I didn't feel like going and editing my post.  My point is, Purple Jesus That I'm Facing In The First Round Of The FFball Tournament, is that it's a competition that is played only every 4 years.  If the Olympics were an every year event like the NBA playoffs, then I think you could make a good case for the Celtics winning it.

Another way of explaining it is; there is only one gold medal at the olympics for men's basketball, and thats a team award. What if there was only one gold medal for swimming all together? Phelps would go down as not being as dominant as he is with winning 8 gold medals. Thats what i meant by it being overrated. If there was 8 gold medals for basketball some how, USA would likely win all 8.
