They must be counting Libertarians as "Independent". Which is significant, because Independents were more knowledgeable than both Dems and Reps in 5 categories, and if you add up all the +/-'s for each category, the Independents are more knowledgeable than followers of both of the two main parties.

That goes without saying. One of the tenants of our party is self-determination and personal responsibility. The more knowledgeable you are the more correct the decisions you make for you and your family will be. If you are waiting for somebody else to do something for you then why bother doing anything that isn't fun.
