We are planning to buy a 28' International CCD ( 7,600 Gross weight) and our current vehicle is not going to work. I would love to hear any recommendations for people who are super happy with their tow vehicle with this weight requirement. Also would love to hear any Do not even think of that warnings.
Thanks,
Rich and Christina
Ready for the road........
First off, welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.
We have a 2005 Safari 25FB, named Lucy. Ready to camp, Lucy tips the scales at 7400#. In the past three years, we have towed Lucy over 50,000 miles, and have spent over 500 nights in her. We tow Lucy with two Suburban 2500's (3/4 ton). These tow vehicles do very well in all circumstances.

I have a Silverado 2500 with a 7600 pound tow capacity, and a trailer with a 7700 pound GVW. I would much rather have more capacity, and we have gone out and found a Suburban with a 9,000 pound tow capacity. Following the "80% rule", we should be much better off as far as euqipment.
If you are looking for a pickup or Suburban, try to find one with 4.10 rear axle ratio, my Silverado would have a ...

We have a Ford F250 Diesel. Moved up from an F150. We have several cross country trips under our belt since we acquired the diesel. Better fuel milage than gas, although more expensive most of the time. But, tons of torque and the knowledge that you can really tow just about anything.
Just set the cruise control on the speed limit and relax. Even the Rockies were no match for the power....
Our 2005 12 passenger Chevy Express 3500 provides about 10,000# towing capacity. We tow a 2006 AS 25' Safari SEFB with it, and with the included tow/haul feature, it shifts and maneuvers easily. The three rear seats are removable, providing many combinations of seating and cargo room.
This is the ideal tow vehicle for us. Happy 'Streaming!
We tow an '01 25' Excella (6500 lbs actual) with a heavy duty, tow package equipped, 1/2 ton GMC extended cab pickup (7800 lb tow capacity). If I were you, I'd get a tow vehicle with more capacity...something in at least the 10,000 pound capacity, and this does not mean one of the over rated 1/2 tons.
Just my opinion, and your mileage may vary.

You didn't specify where you were or where you plan on towing. OH Sorry, where's my manners. WELCOME TO AIRFORUMS.
My personal opinion, sorry everyone has one,is any 2500 rated pickup or suburban will do the job nicely. In other words 3/4 ton. If I were doing it today In today's market ,I think Id look for a (Im not a GM Man) 2500 Silverado with a DuraMax diesel and a Allison Auto .There are ...

really?
That does not sound right..
To the OP; you are squarely in 3/4 ton territory. Whatever flavor you like, but go with a 3/4, if you plan on travelling extensively, you ...

I didn't think so myself, but it is in the owner's manual. '02 Silverado 2500HD, 4x2, 6.0, gas. GVW 8600 tow capacity 7600.
If it had the 4.10 gear in the rear end, it would be 9000 tow capacity, gvw still 8600.
Now, back to the OP's ...

Quote: I generally don't even hook up the W/D torsion bars. Check your factory hitch rating on your truck (there should be a factory sticker on the hitch). Our AS dealer told me that I did not need to hook up the WD bars for short trips. In checking though, I when not using our Equalizer WD bars the F250 factory hitch is only rated at 6000 LBS MAX. 12,500 with WD. That puts us over on the hitch rating and squarely in legal trouble in...
Wow, you guys are great! Thanks for all the welcome and the great ideas. Based on all we read, and our overall needs I think we are headed toward a suburban with a 4.10 axle ratio. if there are other must have items, we are all ears. We are from the Boston area, but have a little place (plus children and grandchildren) in Montana and have children and grandchildren in California. Sick of the endless New England winters, so we plan on following...
Lyle & Margie there is a great article in this months Trailer life on tires and towing speed. I think you might find it interesting and informative and maybe even a life changing experience. Hope you aren't using Marathons.

We tow our 04 28' International with a F-350 crew cab which is a bit overkill for this trailer. We owned the truck before the AS. Last TV was a Suburban 3/4 ton which was a great TV. Would work perfectly for this tow. In my opinion the diesel power is the way to go. We get between 13.5 and 14 mpg fully loaded with the kayaks on the racks. My suggestion would be a 3/4 ton Pick-up or Suburban. Also keep in mind the hitch set-up as well....
I am in the 3/4 ton camp also. I have a 2000 Excursion diesel with 175,000 miles at least 1/3 of it towing. I am still on the original automatic transmission. I tow a 25 Safari GVW 6,300 pounds. The Excursion tows in overdrive on the flat land and keeps up with traffic in the Rockies. Overall towing mileage is 11.5 but I tow at 65 mph and would tow faster if it were not for ST tires on the trailer. Solo mileage is 17. I am looking for a new...
