Thread: PPC anyone?

Started 4 months ago by hictio
Is there anyone here running any Linux distro on a PPC box? I'm sort of tented to put a lousy HDD I have around and give it a shot on my main box, a Quicksilver DP 800 MHz with 1.5 GB RAM.

I ran Debian on my ancient titanium for while was too slow for desktop use on the 550Mhz with 1G ram.

I don't any more, but I've run Gentoo on a couple of Macs. Worked very well indeed.

Debian on a Cube, acting as my home server. Pure awesomeness in a pretty box.

hictio: I obviously can't speak for fruitcos powerbook, but I ran gentoo on a G4 Tibook (667MHz). Absolutely everything worked - all the special keys the whole 9 yards. I can't remember the name of the package that enabled all of that stuff, but I daresay its part of a standard Ubuntu install.

Fotan, thanks. Besides the keyboard, did, for instance the sleep and resume work? And what about the "Desktop Effects"? Thanks!

The TiBooks of that generation used a Radeon Mobility 7500, but I don't know if the PPC drivers are of equal parity to the x86 ones.

Tried the Jaunty (live desktop version) CD. Booting with the 'live video=ofonly' does boot all the way to a Gnome desktop, but with my PowerBook (1.67 GHz, HR, the last PPC model) the video flickers like a MF, the resolution seems to be recognized Ok (1440x900), but it is useless. The whole screen seems have a second fainted desktop on top of the original one.

Debian SMP on a dual G4 450 Power PC. Makes a fine server. Until you install the SMP kernel it will only use one processor.

I run NetBSD 4.0 on a blue and white 400MHz CPU/640MB RAM G3. It's my router/firewall so I've never tried running X on it, but from ssh it's snappy enough.
