Thread: PLEASE HELP!!! HEAD BLEW ON TOUR!!! AMPEG SVT II 1989 TUBE HEAD
Started 1 month, 1 week ago by jdaustin
Hey, my head shut off in the middle of our set tonight and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. I've been running and ampeg 810 and a hartke 410 with it at two ohms. it's done fine for tons of shows now and I was told that two ohms should handle that since they are both 4 ohm cabinets. another bassist at the show said the three tubes on the right had gotten pretty bright. the head then shut off...
If the tube got real bright then take the amp to a good tech to check it
out, may be the power transformer or just need some new tubes. Fuse may
have blow to protect the amp.
thanks so much for the advice guys. does anyone know where the fuse might
be? i looked for one but couldnt see it. it's still in my rack mount case
so i just gave it a quick look over, but if you know where i should look
specifically it would help
thanks again. can anyone give me an idea on how much money and how involved it would be if it was the power transformer? I am familiar with the tube costs and i assume the fuse wouldn't be enough to break me. thanks again. you've all been a huge help. also, this is still weighing on me. is there a chance i've just "totalled" my head? thanks
i'm in my epic. we're touring with a band called harvard. both of us are
from charlotte, nc. I'f i have to wait till i get home then so be it. i was
also just informed that the outlet i was plugged into blew someone's surge
protector to their pedals tonight also. I'll have to look at the fuse
tomorrow, I left it at the place we played tonight because we are going
back there tomorrow to do some ...
There are a limited number of things that could go wrong with your amp. It's probably not your tubes, because unless you've beaten the crap out of them a couple of years is just enough time to warm up. Running them at 2 Ohms probably didn't help but that's probably not the problem.
Look at the back panel. The fuse is on the left-hand side, by the power cord. Pull the fuse out and examine it. It...
I don't know what a power transformer looks like, but this looks like a regular little tube fuse with 10 A 250 V written on it then underneath where it goes is written "10 AMP fast" in pen ink so i think it's a regular fuse, it's just all white. it almost looks like i would expect a blown one to look but the white is so even and consistent throughout the whole fuse that it's hard to think that it's...

I'll go get a fuse now to see if that's it. any other help is appreciated,...
+1 to above post. Bad power in a venue sounds like the culprit & most likely IS just a fuse! Has happened to me on a few occasions over my lifetime of gigging w/ all tube amps. I USUALLY take my Mark Bass LMII along as a back up amp- seeing it's SO SMALL( I use a brief case to carry it & pwr, spkr & a couple of gtr leads!!) & light & sounds great too. NO match for an all tube SVTII tho. I've...
it could possibly be the bias died on the amp which blew the tube(s), which then blew the fuse from shorting. that would explain why 3 tubes lit up brightly before the amp dieing.
