Thread: Overclocking your 1156 CPU? might want to read this before you do.

Started 2 months, 1 week ago by nesquick
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3661 seems some 1156 processors are failing when overclocked past about 4.3ghz At first glance, one might be inclined to think LGA-1156 based processors are intolerant of high-end overclocking, almost as if by design. This is correct to some extent; a quick glance at Intel’s white papers for socket 1156 CPU’s reveals that there are ...

You should probably mention why. The 1156 socket has 66% of the power connections compared to the 1366 equivalent, and thus relies heavily on the solid contact of each pin on the CPU socket. Bad contacts means high resistance, which, from what I gather, means the remaining pins draw more power to compensate. The result is a fried CPU when the CPU is pushed too far. Does this affect all ...

Saw this the other night on extreme systems. Seems to only be effecting people who are putting 1.5v or more into there CPU. Still abit of a shame about build quality. Interesting enough Most of the boards and CPU's still work fine. Even the Board picture is now running a 860 as apposed to the 750 that was running at 5.4ghz when this happened.

This concerns me quite a bit. I was considering a Socket 1156 for a future build, I would like to OC a bit and that puts me right off. Sure it happened past 4.3 but still gives me the gebbeez. Looks like it will be a Socket 1366 for me.

QUOTE (.:Cyb3rGlitch:. @ Oct 17 2009, 10:27 PM) Does this affect all 1156 CPUs? Nope. Only those which use the Foxconn sockets, which is a fair few ASUS motherboards apparently. Who would buy ASUS products anyway?

QUOTE (.:Cyb3rGlitch:. @ Nov 7 2009, 05:12 PM) Care to elaborate? Shoddy, buggy, cheapish, tatty, generally of lesser quality... you get my drift. It just seems that every time I encounter someone who has troubles with a motherboard... it's an ASUS. -------------------- Quote By Nesquick: "...maybe just do that, or what SceptreCore said." I have owned heaps of Asus boards and have had no serious complaints with them, but, I don't buy cheap mobos....Gigabyte have let me down/given me grief on quite a few occaisions (not only mobos, vid cards), MSI have brought out some reasonable boards, but, they've brought out more than their share of shockers too, same as Abit - I've had some brilliant Abit boards, but just as many have broken my heart. DFI aren't bad...
