Thread: Outboard motor question

Started 1 month ago by dukdawg999
I have a 2004 50 HP Yamaha outboard on my duck boat. It sat for about 10 months due to back surgery, but from day 1 when I bought the boat and motor new, I have been runing fuel stabilizer in every tank. Got the boat out this fall, replaced the fuel with new fuel in the tank and added seafoam to help clean it out. boat ran ok, not wanting to really get it. Took it out today for a spin on the ...

any air leaks in your fuel line supply could choke it out at idle speeds. while you pump the bulb listen for an air leak in any of your connections.

last time time i decarbed my outboard with seafoam i fouled a plug and it wouldnt fire at all. i took the plug out and cleaned it up ran fine after that. the decarbing can knock alot of carbon loose and jam up the plugs.

also may not be the case but 2 strokes idle a little lower on ethanol if your state has by chance switched to ethanol in the down time.

Put new fuel as stated .....if that doesnt do the trick most likely carbs need cleaned..............do mine every 4 months or so ......typically the jets will get gunk in them and best to take out and clean

I emptied my tank before I went out this weekend and put the seafoam in it, so I know the gas is good and fresh, I am going to check my plugs on Monday, replace them, they are 4 years old and are the original plugs. I will also check for air leaks in the fuel line also.

It could be a couple different things but I would put money on the carbs being gunked up. Even though you changed the gas, there was still some old fuel in the internal fuel lines and it doesn't take much bad gas to clog the jets. A good way to check is to unscrew the drain plugs on the side of your carbs (it's a brass, flat-head screw). Use a white rag to absorb the fuel and watch what comes out. If the fuel is bad, there will be...

Pull the jets out of the carbs and clean them out. Guaranteed. You can send me the $$$ anytime. No bill.
