Thread: Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Hal2001
Paranormal Activity (2009) As far as I can tell, those who have seen "Paranormal Activity" can be grouped into two broad categories: those who find it to be a frightening and entertaining experience and those who find most of it to be boring. After viewing the film, I, unfortunately, find myself grouped in with the second of the options. It starts with Micah (Micah Sloat) showing his ...

Bronson The story of Britain's most notorious prisoner... Bronson is based on the true story of Michael Peterson, whose only skill seems to be an ability to beat the shit out of people. We follow him from a youth, going into prison, to a young man, going into prison, to an adult, going into prison. Then he does some other stuff, including a stint in a mental asylum, ...

Great. A movie about the most ridiculous and overrated concert event of all-time. All I've read and heard from people who were there is how much of a human cesspool it was. Couldn't care if I ever saw this although since it's Ang Lee, it'll get Oscar nominations either way.

Rocco and His Brothers (1960) It's amazing that the man who put together something as beautiful and elegant as "The Leopard" could put together something as sloppy and incoherent as "Rocco and His Brothers." Yet, in 1960, that's exactly what Luchino Visconti did. He takes a story that had a lot of potential for familial drama and turned it into an overly-melodramatic mess. "Rocco" ...

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring (2003) Ki-duk Kim's "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring" is such a simple film. It is beautifully shot so as to make full use of its locations, yet barely has any plot to speak of. However, this does not stop the film from being engaging in the least as we are treated to a full cycle of seasons regarding our characters who lives are as simple ...

I love this film and Ki-Duk Kim. I also quite like "The Isle". This director films poetry but is not afraid to take risks. His work can be quite startling because he mixes beautiful images with odd violence and sexual situations.

This film turned out to be a big surprise, especially since it looked like just another generic sports flick. Here's my review: http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-3...The-Blind-Side

Lee Daniels's Precious

(Lee Daniels, 2009) Many times, a mainstream film with a wide release will get mixed reviews from critics, no attention from awards shows and will not find an audience, even though the film is actually an incredible and complex piece of craftsmanship that nobody seems to be able to properly appreciate for what it is. Many times these movies end up becoming classics in their own right, and in hindsight their critical dismissal at the time of...

Wow, talk about a bump... so yeah, I totally agree: I still think that this is one of the best films of 2006 and just so rich and rewarding... and impeccably well directed by Todd Field; I am totally excited about his directing Blood Meridian - I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I think that his calculated and aesthetic but dark and brooding style will fit the material perfectly. And of course, this film is totally underrated - Field was...

Yes, I'm not sure what they're thinking about a sequel. I like the finite quality of the movie's clever final moments, but if Blomkamp is interested in exploring deeper concepts then I'd be down for a sequel.

You've never seen the original? That tackled things like a girl being taken advantage of via casting couch by some sleeze with a modelling agency card, eating disorders, a guy battling with his own sexuality and abortion.... It was always going to be a given that the remake was never going to be as hard hitting. Mines coming to me on Bluray, hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow

Great flick. I love the visual gags like the vagrant appearing above the cityscape, the entire storyline from the time we see B uttle appear, and the humor throughout. Just remember, paranoia breeds confidence.

Little Children is a great and Todd Field's directing skills will really get challenged as he's currently adapting Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian into a film. Most McCarthy fans say it's his best work and the 1st 40 or so pages I read (I didn't finish it) were fascinating.
