Thread: Opinions for new 870 stock (pistol grip?)

Started 4 weeks ago by readyme
I am looking for a new stock for my 870. I have the stock wood set right now and am not really happy with it. I like the look of the "traditional" shotgun stock shape VS. a "tactical" pistol grip stock.....But, I am starting to think the pistol grip might be more comfortable. When I hold the shotgun up, my trigger finger naturally pulls up and back at about a 45 degree angle, but the trigger ...

there is a thread about 'how many times people have fired a pistol grip shotgun' the info there might be helpful

I can confirm that the grip area on the Hogue stock is quite a bit more vertically oriented, it's almost like an intermediate step between a regular curved stock and pistol gripped one.

I believe the Houge might be a good bet. Do be careful about the Remington stocks with the molded pistol grips though. The angle is really off in my opinion. You might look at a Mesa stock setup too. It does not allow a wood stock unless you build it yourself but it really is a comfortable setup.

I was considering the Mesa Tactical pistol grip setup that Rshooter mentioned, but that gets spendy real quick...the Mesa conversion piece, an AR pistol grip, and an AR adjustable stock...more than I am willing to try. I think the Hogue stock is the way I will try...thanks Youngster. Anybody know where I can get a Hogue stock for "cheap"?

Ringer replied 3 weeks, 6 days ago
I don't have a "vertical" comparison pic but this one shows how much meatier the Hogue is compared to stock. I like the Hogue so much better than the stock synthetic. Not sure what is "cheap" to you. Midway prices them at $45 but out of stock. $49 including the forend, and in stock. Side "vertical" view.

Ringer, can you post a picture of them side by side...on their side to see the profile? $49 sounds like a good price, I think the MSRP on Hogue's website says $80 or so.

What about a stock like this. I've seen the stocks for sale at Cabelas and Academy. Not sure of the pricing though...

I actually like a thumbhole stock, provided you're a right hander. I'd try the feel of one of those in teh store. Keep in mind, your hand, especially if it is bigger, will absorb some recoil on a thumbhole. As for a full stock/pistol grip combo, I'd look at the Speedfeed.

Damn you ArmedBear, now I have to go shoot some more shotguns (OK, that is a good thing). I have been wanting to take a Mosberg 590 for a spin, I guess now is my opportunity.
