I have been noticing the same thing myself.

Everyone seems to like the Alienbees but I was hoping to keep the cost down more. I looked into CFs and they may be OK for flowers and small things if I can get some of the higher wattage daylight bulbs. My orchid in the gallery was shot with a halogen light but it is not easy to use, is very hot, and not on an adjustable stand. I'll keep looking. :-)

Thanks for writing down your thoughts in such a detail mate. I haven't actually seen the pictures you posted before but they look very promising. I have all faith that you will master those shadows and dark spots. Your "road" shots are always amazing. This challenge is the perfect opportunity to test the wireless flash capabilities of the 7D.
