Story : http://www.p2pnet.net/story/30676 The original Napster P2P file sharing service comprised a protocol which let users to move files computer to computer. Music industry pressure buried it in 2001. But soon after, it was disinterred as a pale facsimile of its former self and is today owned by Best Buy which, after spending $121 million to buy what amounts to little more than a ...
the only connection to opennap and napster involved here are the names. i had the occassion to look at opennap's sourceforge page a month or so ago, and was surprised to see them talking about restarting the project. little did i suspect this was what they meant.
Operations like this usually go this way. A p2p client is returned from the dead. but it's infected with riaa restriction Old users of the system see this name and go... wow a new version of my old favorite program. The old user trys the old program and find's that it does not work as it should. They can't seem to find or download anything...Worse yet they may get directed to some type of Pay ...
From their SourceForge page: Compliance We will if needed shut down this project if it doesn't satisfy the RIAA requirements. WTF?!? SF has always been about FOSS. So presumably they'll be posting their sourcecode? If they manage to satisfy MAFIAA requirements, they'll fail to satisfy consumer requirements. If it turns out to good enough for anyone to give a toss (massively unlikely), ...
stiggy: i think what's going on here is that someone has taken over the opennap project who has no interest in anything but the name. opennap was started on sourceforge 8 years ago or so, and until VERY recently, all the source was freely available there. the new people involved with the name are clearly going in the opposite direction from dr. scholl and the others who worked on the project ...
Napster? It's dead. It has one of the liveliest corpses in history though. (I'm looking at Limewire, Frostwire, aMule, eMule, Bittorrent, gentulla <sp> file sharing protocol...ad nauseous...
Updated.... Fairwell (Again) OpenNap … http://www.p2pnet.net/story/31156 ” You win but in a way we all lose. I’ve taken the liberty of removing all technical information from the page as well as the source code. While the code is still circulating out there, the original page housing it will be taken down. “Sorry you think it was a joke but then again, I guess we have the last laugh ...
Just so there is no confusion (if there were to be any), while they are stopping work on their project, OpenNap is not shut down, lol. Numerous OpenNap servers still run daily, in fact, mine runs itself absolutely perfect. Edit: Let me correct this, it's a SlavaNap server.

First and foremost i wish to respond to those who are asking about OpenNap. Yes, OpenNap was a project abandoned long ago. It was sitting in the Sourceforge Archives for over eight years and up until 2004/2005, none of its listservers were updated. I took over that project in an attempt to revive it and to improve it. I have been a member of Sourceforge since 2003 and privately have been working on OpenNap since its initial development. The...
