of trying to find illnesses to blame our shortcomings on. I used to think I was just lazy in high school, now I have a list of diseases I can blame.

Edited on Mon Oct-05-09 03:52 AM by MichaelHarris someone will make some killer pills for it also. You ever read about the guy who discovered it? I heard an interview with him on the radio. Basically he was sitting around wondering why he was a failure and suddenly said, "hey I think I'll call it Asperger's" I sat in my car and laughed my ass off at that guy.

in all my years at DU to place someone on IGNORE. Yours is more of the kind of attitude I'd expect from a "compassionate Republican". Pathetic.

without having already consulted (probably extensively) with experts. And your comment about "basement dwelling shut-ins" is a terrible slur on adults with a real disorder.

Thank you. I'm not ready to agree that it disproves anything, but it's a question that should be asked in this country.

mental retardation in those days. And we would not have seen them in the schools because kids in that boat did not go to regular schools then, if they were even at home. It still seems that autism has risen dramatically though.

but you share with them the characteristic of instantly suspecting anyone who reports a problem of 'making excuses' for their 'laziness'. Some doubtless do, just as there are some people who do cheat on welfare. But having the default response of 'oh, they must be making some excuse for their personal failures' is a Republican/ Thatcherite characteristic.

in effect an emergency. Parents are legitimately concerned over kids clinically diagnosed. That's the point at hand. A lot of people cheat on their taxes every year. That doesn't mean taxes should not go to repair bridges.

Serious question. Diagnosis standards have changed over the yrs. And acceptability of getting a diagnoses (rather than hiding or warehousing someone) along with being able to work with it better has changed also. No, I am NOT saying it is a mental illness, but saying that 30 yrs ago it was considered such for many and they were shunted into state mental institutions. Now there is better understanding and support available, so I think some are...
