Thread: Oldest movie with talking machine/robot

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by Pekka-3
I am looking for the first - or one of the first - movies to include a machine/robot that communicates by means of human language. I would also appreciate old movie suggestions that include fully conversational [A.I.] systems, such as HAL in "2001: A Space Odyssey". Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated!

The robotrix version of Maria, Maschinenmensch in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" could speak but you can't hear her because being (1927) the talkies hadn't quite arrived yet.

Forbidden Planet (1956) springs to mind. This was the birth of Robbie the Robot, who turned up all over the place afterwards. There may have been other talking robots prior to this - but I always think of Robbie as being the first Smile - it may never happen

Maybe the old Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers serials of the 30's 40's. They had robots, maybe some talking ones? Old movies with fully conversational A.I. systems. Alphaville (1965) Colossus: The Forbin Project(1970) I just can't get enough minimalism.

'Metropolis' 1927 is probably the oldest, but it is silent. The robots communicate, the film is silent. Talk about thinking ahead!!
