I am interested in fitting an oil temp gauge to my R1100S.
My previous post on this topic got a limp (actually zero) response, so here goes again.
I found an article (by CycleRob) on fitting an oil temp gauge, which requires a sensor to be fitted in the engine casing behind the black plastic alternator cover.
My 2004 R1100S has an oil temp sensor in the cooling oil circuit ...
I've been toying with the same idea. I would think the RS setup is an output from the ecu to drive the display and not directly from the sensor. I am thinking more along the lines of a sensor that would be attached to the hot line to the cooler or the oil filter like a thermocouple to drive a compatable gauge. I've seen this type in the past with a 2 18" gauge, but I would prefer something small...
JDuke - That is what I was using back in the 70's when I had a 75/5 with an S fairing and one gauge in the dash was for oil temperature (the other opening was for a bong - hey, I'm jus' kiding). The brass plug you see replaces the standard drain plug. Run the sending wire bundle up to the gauge and connect. For a hole-in-the-dash placement, a U shaped bracket in the back tightens everything up....
That whole wire/gauge/drain plug deal sounds so 1970s. This is the modern era. I am sure you can find a digital display that does not quite fit anywhere on the bike, that would communicate with the drain plug via some wireless technology, perhaps bluetooth. You would also receive satellite radio stations, and listen to pod casts of your favorite old time radio showes. Of couse it would not work ...

Being that my BCR is the first air-cooled cycle I've owned in many years, I still can't get used to NOT looking at the temp gauge and every now-and-then I find my self looking at the instrument cluster trying to find the gauge (only for a fraction of a second or two!).
In spite of my curiosity of what the engine/oil temp is, I figure BMW is smarter than I and they felt a temp gauge just ...
if your info is correct, i would be that if we could determine the output form the computer to the display on the RS, the same might apply to the 1100s, i haven't seem the wiring diagram but there's no reason to suspect that the boxes would be different between common years.
if you can find the computer pinout for the RS temp readout , please post, i've already got a digital display from ...
THe BMW scan tool reads oil temp. No for sure on 05S, but that would seem another way to access that data. Well of course we have to find something we can mount that reads it. Guess we could duct tape the scanner to the bars. If oil temp is a real concern then maybe just some heat tape placed in a couple of good areas would show you what you need to know after a particularly hard and hot ride.
The RID oil temp display is not driven by the ECU.
The Haynes wiring diagram for the R1150RS shows the purple wire from the sensor going to the ECU pin 7, and also to the RID pin 7, ie common to both.
The R1100S has a black/white wire from the sensor to ECU pin 7 only.
The other wire from the sensor is a brown/grey common ground. (common to the TPS and air temp sensors).
If ...
If you care to vist my post again, I have added more info to the thread prior to this post. I am curious about your LCD gauge. Lascar (emt1900). Can you point me to a more info on this? I am in South Africa (Cape Town), and this type of thing is not as readily available here. My thought was to use a BMW RID, but a single possibly smaller dedicated LCD gauge for temp would be even better from a mounting point of view. Thanks.
i bought it from newark.com, big electronics supplier, i have installed one of their voltage displays and it work reasonable well except the lascar stuff has a refresh rate of 3 times per second , should be every 2-5 seconds, the lascar emt1900 wants an input from a 10 ohm NTC ,
That lascar module looks like a good, simple and cheap solution to the problem..thanks 850dunstall!!! See Matabel what a great pool of knowledge we have here on Pelican!
