I've seen this addressed in other threads, and I have the PDF of the manual, but I can't believe it is the small domed thing immediately behind the intake manifold.
I'm going to spray some cleaner back there, first, 'cause it's kinda funky, but is this really where it is? I'm trying to figure out how to get a good grip on it with the intake manifold and the firewall so close to it.

Sounds like a logical plan-off-attack. I'll mess with it this weekend.
Thanks for the heads up...it's been so long since I had a vehicle which had been touched by someone else, I forgot how boneheaded they can be.

When you wrench the middle the three arms rotate to grab and eventaully twist the filter. Works great except you have to be careful where you position the wrench arms. IF ...

If so, because it's upside-down, it's going to be a leaking mess. No, it drains down every time the car is shutdown-expect no significant mess. What's nice (if you can call it that) about its location, is that you can do everything topside, ...

If so, because it's upside-down, it's going to be a leaking mess. Your car doesn't have a canister filter, so don't worry. It's really not a mess. Just think of it the same way as the W126 oil filter, just in the back.
