2 general schools of thought... 1) When iDrive tells you its time for an oil change, or annually (this is BMW's position). 2) Every 7500 miles (a general consensus) or annually if using top quality synthetic oils that meet BMW specs. Personally..... I do # 2. But I own my car. People who only lease for a few years may opt for #1 thinking that the car will be someone else's issue...

Yes, but at your expense.

I change at about 7,500 regardless of what the car tells me. BMW recommended synthetic oil, changed at Valvoline, for $80. Well worth it and I was in and out in a half hour.

BMW always recommends its 5W30 High Performance Synthetic oil. Its available at the dealer and is actually reasonably priced if you compare it to say Mobil 1 0W40 (European formula), Castrol Syntec 0W30 European formula (Gernam made). Check your owners manual - it probably specifies an ACEA A3 rated oil with the BMW LL-01 certification. Also check the attachment here.

Update: I took the advice on this forum. Called up a dealer and told him that the car is 1 year old and has not had an oil change, though it has only 10K miles on it. Dealer agreed for a free oil change. No questions asked..

Just throwing it out here, but an oil change on most cars only takes about 15-20 min; not sure if this is the case with the E60 or not. You can siphon the oil out if you don't have somewhere to jack the car up; just pop the hood, drain and pull the filter, siphon out oil, replace filter and oil, done. If it's a mid-service change (i.e. not on the iDrive) you don't need to worry about resetting the interval.
