Thread: Octomom doctor expelled from ASRM

Started 1 month, 3 weeks ago by cl-seglads
I know the ladies on this board love a good debate so here you go. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-10-18-oct omom-doctor-fertility_N.htm What do you think? On one hand, I dislike people like the Octomom who give IF patients a bad name by engaging in irresponsible behavior. On the other hand, should doctors be given the right to say who can and cannot have children? Its a toughie...

I think it is very appropriate for the RE to be expelled from ASRM.  He went way overboard on how many to transfer.  He was not inline with their protocols.  We all know that of all the fertility treatments (ivf, iui, fertility drugs alone, etc.) that IVF is the most controlled.  Yes, there can still be splits, but with IVF the high # of multiples can be controlled.  I do think a Dr can say ...

I'm glad to see that this man is no longer associated with ASRM. What he did was totally irresponsible. The woman already had 6 kids, no job and was on welfare. He should have abided by the limitations set by ASRM for a woman of her age. When I was 42, we did my last IVF w/ my own eggs and we decided to put all 6 embies back in hoping that one would take. None did so we moved on to DE. However,...

I think he should have been expelled and I agree with the decision. However, I don't think this has anything to do with deciding who can or can't have children.  He went against the standards of how many embryos to transfer, and that's why he should be expelled.  A woman under 35 with a history of succesful pregnancies (including a set of twins) should not have had 6 embryos transferred.

I agree that he should have been expelled and IMO, his medical license should be revoked. There is NO WAY he should have transferred 6 embryos in a young-ish woman who had already had 6 children through IVF. In fact, even if she didn't already have 6 kids, there's no way the RE should have transferred that many embryos in a young-ish woman with a good prognosis. Of course, she shares in the ...

Hi, I agree with PPers regarding that particular doctor. I shed no tears for him. However, if I were an RE and Octomom pre-octobabies came to me wanting to have more children, I'd have a situation on my hands. She already had a lot of children and was struggling to care for the ones she had. I'm not sure that she should have had any embies transferred, even 1-2. But who am I to say this? ...

We didn't fill out any financial information when doing IVF, they were just interested that we had the money for the procedure.  I don't see how a RE would be aware, or that it would be appropriate for them to be aware of her financial situation.  We don't forbid people on welfare or govt assistance from having sex.   What is appropriate is that the RE follow established guidelines for number of...
