i support the president's decision and hope that he is diligent and unflinching in the face of the hard decisions he'll have to make as a result.

A surge worked in Iraq - not sure the terrain and enemy in Afghanistan would require more troops. Time will tell, but better too many troops than not enough...
I voted in support of his decision. It's a tough choice, and my guess is it'll be touch and go as to whether the final outcome is good. But I believe it would be even worse if the decision had gone the other way. If Karzai doesn't clean up his government and step up to the plate in a reasonable amount of time, we should begin a phased withdrawal out of there. In the meantime, this may ...

you're right. there's likely no outcome that will be desirable.
but the difference between an ugly victory and the far uglier chaos of leaving the taliban to prey on afghanistan and pakistan is monumental.
Unfortunately, there's no surety in the equation on either side of the current situation. I think it's important that we get our troops out of the war zone in the Middle East as soon as it is feasible and safe to do so--and a lot of that feasibility and safety relies heavily upon leaving secure governments that the people want behind after we go. The best way to accomplish that is to ...
KABUL U.S. Marines and Afghan troops Friday launched the first offensive since President Barack Obama announced an American troop surge, striking against Taliban communications and supply lines in a southern insurgent stronghold, a military spokesman said. Hundreds of troops from the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines and the Marine reconnaissance unit Task Force Raider were dropped by helicopter and MV-22 Osprey aircraft behind Taliban lines in...
The second link is rife with inaccuracy, especially that part about USAFRICOM being headquartered in Africa: AFRICOM Presence U.S. Africa Command will be headquartered at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany, for the foreseeable future. The command inherits a small but meaningful U.S. military presence already existing in numerous African nations, to include Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, as well as Defense Department personnel assigned to U.S....

Huge annual federal deficits may certainly undermine our economy. We spend more on Health & Human Services, Social Security, and the Treasury Dept (including interest on our growing debt) each year than we do on National Defense. Here's an interesting chart comparing past and projected deficits. http://blog.heritage.org/2009/03/24/...t-in-pictures/ And levity? Hardly.
