Thread: OT: Ethanol and Fuel Additives Killing My RT's Fuel Strip
Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Nail24
I just had BMW install the 4th digital fuel strip in my 08 RT. I was told that the culprit is ethanol blend fuel and additives are what may be destroying fuel strip. He also said that Ducati has already gone on record as saying that the ethanol is ruining their fuel tanks. Does anyone have any insight on this issue?
I have been replacing needle valves regularly at the shop lately... The rubber tips are swelling and not sealing anymore. So I get viton tipped needles that are Alcohol resistant.
I do not know for sure, if that is the cause.. But it sure beats blaming ElNino, or the Ozone... And customers like to have something to blame...

Being that this is America, why not blame Obama? I am sure that is his fault as well...
its all about solvent strength. here's a chart, gasoline is mostly toluene and benzene, ethanol is at the opposite end of the spectrum. water is a "1" and is the highest.
Solvent Solvent Strength
Methanol 0.95
Ethanol 0.88
2-Propanol 0.82
Acetonitrile 0.65
Ethyl Acetate 0.58
Tetrahydrofuran 0.57
Acetone 0.56
Dichloromethane 0.42
Chloroform 0.4
Diethyl Ether 0.38
...

not this one, although many things are, and I'll be chuckling when his illuminati handlers toss his kenyan-born keister to the wolves, as they surely will when his usefulness as a token buffoon is up
it IS the ethanol, as well as the substitutes for MTBE, which replaced lead.
fiberglass and plastic tanks are subject to this....

Thanks Shreddr,TM and Jony. Now I have to figure who's not slipping the corn oil into the pooty. It's really getting harder to find the pure stuff down here.

Well we've heard yer whining loud and clear, but what do you want? Maybe everybody to start flapping around on the floor screaming oh $hit oh dear bubba's bike is broke and bmw don't know how ta fix it? Maybe we should all march on our dealers in a Pelican support of your problem. Or if it's sympathy you want, here's a sniff for ya. sniff Other than that we obviously have nothing to offer.
FB, ethanol does not directly cause problems in the combustion chamber. However, the aluminum, brass, plastic, rubber, and general gunk that it brings to the combustion chamber is credited with causing problems. This stuff also gets into the oil and is spread around the motor.

believe it or not, the ethanol (ethyl alcohol, ie hooch) is put in there as a benefit to the cars, its not really about being green. water and gasoline dont mix, water and ethanol do mix, ethanol and gasoline mix. water is more dense than gas, so it sinks right to the bottom of a gas tank. when you add ethanol to a tank of gasoline that has water on the bottom it actually allows the water/ethanol/gasoline mixture to form. ever wonder how dry...
