The world has tried patience and ignorance before. It never works. Ever. Maniacal dictators don't turn into fucking Barney because we aid and abet them in their quest to subjugate their own people in order to maintain power. This idiotic agenda of wrist slapping only hurts the Korean citizens being starved and tortured. But then again, the UN and the rest of the world don't seem ...

Better jaw-jaw than war-war, though. That said, if this is indeed related to succession issues within the DPRK, I'd be somewhat concerned about their future actions staying within rational boundaries.

This is a little worrisome, but not too much. Call me naive, but I have a little too much faith in common sense (even when it comes to North Korea) to expect the worst. Nor is there any tenable solution to this that is not purely diplomatic; North Korea's ties with China and Russia (as do South Korea's to the U.S.) make it untouchable, while even a mano-a-mano slugfest between North ...

^ True that. The US can count on its standard of living falling precipitously if there's ever a Second Korean War. No matter whose side we took on that one, we would lose many valuable trading partners. And if we didn't get involved at all, we'd lose them all. That's the real reason we still keep troops in Japan so long after the end of WWII -- we're keeping a menacing presence in ...

I largely agree with you Belisarius, but then the 20th century is fairly rife with wars that shouldn't, from a rationalist perspective, have happened. In a case where we have an opaque system like the DPRK, where it is difficult to discern the meaning or cause of their actions, and where a succession struggle might skew the expected effect of other countries upon their actions, ...

^ Economically, no. Militarily, yes. If they want the US troops and bases gone so badly, why don't they just tell them to GTFO? The US protects Japan from a whole bunch of neighbors who have historical reasons to want to kick their ass. We also patronize their businesses for all our nonmilitary high-tech needs. In exchange, all we ask is that we get to use their land as a military ...

Sure, they allow us to post military forces there because it is in their interests to do so. Being each other's bitches... that's another term for "allies" isn't it?

I have a really bad feeling about this situation. Let's hope our country doesn't decide to go to war with them. The Koreans are being very unwise , ever since they carried out that taste the whole world is turning on them. I honestly wish the nuclear bomb was never invented. It has caused so many problems for our species.

It's worth noting that a strong U.S. presence is in the interest of her neighbors, as well; neither China nor Korea want a militarily-independent Japan.

^ Rumor has it he's not in good health at all. I wouldn't necessarily expect much of a change once he dies, though. As Castro did in Cuba, I'm sure Kim already has a successor picked out, who'll carry on his legacy to the letter. It's just how dictatorships work.

MyDoors, in which case the overriding concern becomes the prevention of either of those scenarios from occurring.
