Thread: No access to any funds of any kind until pay day...

Started 1 month, 2 weeks ago by Samuel Jones
I've been dealing with a person who is finding himself in a predicament because of this at the moment.   I mean no money in an account, no credit line, no available credit on a credit card, no ability to have your credit limit extended, no family members to go to... no nothing.  Whatever you got in your wallet has to make it through to pay day.   It's been awhile for me.  I broke ...

Yes, I remember that on an almost weekly basis when I was younger.  I too broke through that phase by about 24 y.o., thankfully. Are you lending this person a few dollars occasionally to help him through the week?

Sounds like this person could use an emergency fund.

Here is a person who might consider putting his pocket change into a coin jar every night.

Sounds like this person could use an emergency fund Yes, but in my case I didn't make enough to stash anything away.  Of course I had a few habits that weren't helpful- take out coffee, 2 cups/ day. buying prepared lunch, 4-6 dollars/ day. drinks after work, varied. cigarettes.

I was out of that phase at 22 thanks to credit cards.  Ran up about $5k years 22 thru 25 which I paid off at 27 years old. When I didn't have credit, I'd use the payday lenders and pay the exorbitant fees.   Edit to add:  I think most of the 19-22 age group that I come across live paycheck to paycheck.

Luckily I found this board before I moved out of the college dorm (where since food and rent were paid for already having no cash for two weeks only meant I couldn't go shopping not that I didn't eat). Honestly I have trouble even imaging this scenario but then again I have always at least had my credit card and mom and dad to fall back on, but then again that could be because I only had to do...

I've never had $0 in my account.  Since I started working I've made sure to have $1k in there as an EF.  It's grown since then with increase in income, but having at least $1k in the bank has always been a priority of mine.   Now I've been to where I have been "broke" in that I have no money to spend b/c I don't want to raid my $1k, but I've never gone without any money at all until payday....

Are you lending this person a few dollars occasionally to help him through the week? He travelled with a colleague and the travel plans changed and left him in a tough spot.   Everything was already paid for.  No hotel to deal with - plane ticket is already paid for, etc.  How do you get to the point that you're so short on funds that you don't have enough money to arrange travel from ...

I was raised similar to Windy. ?I am not sure of his location at childhood, but seems a little rural. ?I was too. ?If you were raised in a city, and your child is being raised in a city....things are different. I make no secret of my background.? I was raised just outside a tough little river-town in Iowa.? All my old friends are either dead or in prison.? When I get news from home it's?never good.? Last news I got was that one of my...

?My kids also will not be picking through the neighbors' trash and they won't be eating squirrels for dinner. I think that scoring something that's useful and in good shape for free is great no matter where I find it.? Why is it better if you pay for it? ? As for eating squirrel, I never get to anymore.? I don't hunt and DH only hunts for deer.? I'm sorry you never had the chance to bond with your parents while...

No - a child doesn't decide that they want to be self-sufficient by announcing that they wish to contribute finanacially to the running of the household.? Maybe that happens in the squirrel-eating part of the world, but it doesn't happen anywhwere else.? I'm not talking about the parents accepting money from a kid to pay the bills, or keep a roof over their head.? We agree whole heartedly on that- it's the parent's...

Pizza was a treat for my family. We never had takeout pizza. When I babysat, if the family had pizza, it was a treat for me, but since most of the families around me were lower income, too, when I babysat it was typically franks and beans. I completely understand WCP buying pizza for the family on Friday nights. I would have done that, too.

I'd give each of them 10 bucks a day to hang around my house and shoot everything that moves. That would be abusive to your daughters.

Samuel Jones: 1.?Three perfectly fine pumpkins sitting on a curb is not "going through people's trash", and?my kids recognize total waste -- and how to salvage that --when they see it. 2. You are just about the world's most pompous ass. Well, 2nd after BHO. 3. My daughter is pretty sure she knows who your daughters are, or their equivalents at her school, and they are the object of her pity. 4. It saddens me to know that...

Your hypothetical caviar analogy still fails because I would not permit my daughter to buy expensive caviar for the house every Friday night.? We don't have that kind of home.? If she was routinely buying expensive caviar it would be only for herself. So in other words, you wouldn't allow her to share.

As far as kids being harmed by being different from their peers, that can happen, but I don't think that sewing your own clothes would set them apart enough to cause any sort of harm. If the clothes are obviously homemade and the norm for the student's peers is to wear expensive, designer clothes, then there could be harm.? School society is much different now than in the 70s (I wore homemade clothes in the 70s...my aunt was a...

I think both sides of this debate?are accusing the other of holding a more extreme position than they actually do.? I don't think anyone on this thread is arguing that kids shouldn't do age-appropriate chores or that they should have all of their spending money provided to them free of work.? And I would hope no one thinks that kids should be sent out to get a job as soon as they're of legal age AND that they should contribute...

Every US law I've ever heard of - certainly my home on the prairie, sets 14 as the minimum age for child labor and then only lets children that young work part time. Unless it is a family business where the parent of the child is the sole propriator or a partner. If the family business is an LLC, INC, etc, then age of the child is a factor.
